Physique
Lett. 38 (1977) L-299 does not mention aprevious
article of Z. Golschmidt, W. Low and M.Foguel
entitled Fluorescence spectrumof
trivalentnunadium in corundum, Phys. Lett. 19 (1965) 17.
Both articles report the same spectrum but the new measurements carried out in our work
give
moredetailed information on this emission. Behaviour of the lines under stress and the absence of a measurable Jahn Teller distortion in the
emitting
level and in the fundamental1 AI
level allow us to attribute this emission to thelE(t2)
levelcoming
from thelE(t2)
level of cubic symmetry.
(The
otherpossibility
wasthat the
emitting
level comes from theIT 2(t2)
levelof cubic
symmetry.)
The time constant of the emission(r = 2.5 x 10 - 6 s for T Â
point of He) is very
shortcompared
to that ofruby.
This is accounted forby
anon-radiative
decay through
the 3E stateoriginating
from the fundamental
3T1(t2)
level of cubic symmetry.This
explains
the weakintensity
observed andwhy
theconstruction of the 1.2 mm

maser consideredby
Golschmidt could not be carried out.We are indebted to Dr B.
