HAL is a multi-disciplinary open access archive for the deposit and dissemination of sci- entific research documents, whether they are pub- lished or not. The documents may come from teaching and research institutions in France or abroad, or from public or private research centers.

L’archive ouverte pluridisciplinaire HAL, est destinée au dépôt et à la diffusion de documents scientifiques de niveau recherche, publiés ou non, émanant des établissements d’enseignement et de recherche français ou étrangers, des laboratoires publics ou privés.

EUROPHYSICS LETTERS

Thanks to the enthusiastic and tenacious efforts of a group of European physicists, a new fortnightly letters journal of the European Physical Society (EPS) « Europhysics Letters » will be published from January lst, 1986.

This new journal results from the fusion of the « Journal de Physique Lettres » and « Lettere al Nuovo Cimento ».

It will be published by the EPS, the Italian and French Physical Societies which have donated their respective

letters journals, and the Institute of Physics which has provided an initial working capital. These partners are

supported by the member societies of the EPS, which have given guarantees of further capital, should this be needed.

It should be noted that the creation of this new journal will decrease the number of existing journals and reduce

the reader’s subscription charges.

The agreements between the national societies will still enable the authors to submit brief articles to the regular national journals. Thus from January lst, 1986, we intend to add a Short Communications Section at the beginning of the « Journal de Physique ».

« Europhysics Letters » will publish letters of* high quality, ftom worldwide origin, in all fields of physics. A

letter is a short and urgent communication ; it should certainly be understood by specialists, but authors will be

encourllged to write in a manner which is intelligible to a wider public.

Edition

The Editors, chosen by the EPS, are nominated for a period of three years with successive rotations in a steady

state. The Editors will have the full scientific responsibility of their respective sectors in physics. Thefirst editorial

board is given below :

Editor-in-Chief : N. Kurti, University of Oxford

Co-Editors : G. Barbiellini, CERN, Geneva

F. Bassani, Scuola .Normale Superiore, Pisa

E. Brézin, CEN-Saclay

B. Cagnac, Université Pierres Marie Curie, Paris J. Demaret, Université de Liège

L. D. Faddeev, Academy of Sciences, Leningrad

P. Fulde, MPI fir Festkôrperforschung, Stuttgart

C. J. Joachain, Université Libre de Bruxelles M. Kaufmann, MPIfùr Plasmaphysik, Garching

T. W. B. Kibble, Imperial College, London

F. Mezei, Academy of Sciences, Budapest

R. H. Siemssen, K. V. 1., Groningen

J. P. Toennies, MPI für Stromungsf, Gôttingen

G. Weber, DESY, Hamburg

The journal will be prepared for the printer in Bologna and the printing and the distribution will be done by the

Editions dg Physique.

« Europhysics Letters » will be published twice a month (the first and the 15th), with less than 64 pages per issue in a jôrmat 16 cm x 24 cm. The letters may be submitted and published, when accepted, in English, French,

German or Russian.

Instructions to the authors

The manuscript should always be sent to the :

Manuscripts~ can

be accepted from September lst, 1985

Four copies of the manuscripts and one original of the drawings will be required. The length of the manuscripts

should not exceed 3 000 words equivalent (abstract, illustrations and references included), which is about four printedpages. Though a certain flexibility will be retained, we will not consider any manuscript exceeding the limit

of six printed pages.

Instructions to the readers

Subscription forms will be circulated shortly by the Editions de Physique. Any library subscribing either to

« Journal de Physique Lettres » or to « Lettere al Nuovo Cimento » will automatically receive notification of the transfer mechanism.

Individual members of the EPS may subscribe at a reduced price, by ordering through the EPS Secretariat

or on the form provided when paying the annual membership fee.

Prices have been set as follows :

Institutions Sw. Fr. 550 EPS Individual Members Sw. Fr. 55

Note the exceptionally low price to Individual Members. The price for Institutions is well below the combined price of « Journal de Physique Lettres » and « Lettere al Nuovo Cimento ».

We sincerely hope that the authors and readers who have contributed to the quality of the Journal de Physique

Lettres, will transfer their interest to Europhysics Letters. T’his support is the key to success for the future European journal.
