13 A gardened management: An approach inspired by Mary Parker Follett Emmanuel Groutel

Can the analogy between management and forestry offer a better representation of contemporary management? While Frederic Taylor led the development of scientific management in the early 20th century with a mechanistic view of organizing, Mary P. Follett presented during the same period, a more organic perspective. Her view of management was not so much about dividing functions for better control, but rather developing creative communities in the midst of a complex and ever-changing living world. This three part article presents first, the overall context leading to a “gardened” view of management, secondly a comparison of Taylor’s and Follett’s approaches, and thirdly, examines the emergent tendencies of a “gardened” approach to management.

31 When new forms of retromarketing emerge:

The case of Citroën DS and its “anti retro”

Marc Prieto, Philippe Boistel

Academic researchers define retromarketing as “a revival of an old product or service from the past” (Brown, 2001). Recently, brands use slogans inspired by this strategy and introduce hybrid retromarketing concepts. This article aims to understand one of these hybrid concepts from the Citroën car brand that is called “antiretromarketing”. To do so, we question consumers and sale repre- sentatives in two qualitative studies. The results analysis determines consumer’s perceptions and defines this hybrid strategy.

51 The role of local employees in the expatriate adjustment.

The case of multinationals in Morocco and Tunisia Yassine Slama

This research aims at better understanding of the attitudes of local employees and expatriates toward expatriation concept to identify factors of expatriation failure or success. It provides a broader view on expatriation in multinational companies in Morocco and Tunisia, two countries that offer a similar framework to international companies. We studied the managerial implications in order to improve the efficiency of companies that decide to expatriate some employees.

75 Performance of innovative interorganisational practices:

Toward a conceptual model

Olivier Lavastre, Blandine Ageron, Ludivine Chaze-Magnan

In today’s market, going beyond company boundaries with suppliers and cus- tomers is a source of value creation for customers. Nevertheless, it requires coordination and collaboration along the whole supply chain. Supply chain management (SCM) has recently been an important source of innovation for and between suppliers and customers providing recent new directions for these inter-organisational innovative practices. The objective of this article is to characterize these practices and to evaluate what are their effects on the perfor- mance of the supply chain.

91 The assembly of networks and supply chains as a new form of collaboration

Frédéric Pellegrin-Romeggio, Diego Vega

The current economic environment is generally characterized by volatile markets, products with short life cycles, and geographically dispersed companies. In order to ensure a better cooperation on the management of their flows, many companies set up temporary supply chains reconfigurable as needed. These are often organized around a central actor (pivot) performing relativity stable fonctions. This article identifies through two complementary case studies, a new role of “pivot assembler” to better take into account the various temporality of supply chains.

107 Collaborative finance between buyer and supplier as a means of competitiveness reinforcement inside supply chains

Marc Gaugain, Jean-Laurent Viviani, Thi Le Hoa Vo

In the absence of financial collaboration between members of the supply chain, the cost of global financing of the chain is worthlessly brought up. This litera- ture review shows that trade credit is a collaboration and optimization tool of supply chain financing and that innovative financing forms would allow going even farther on the way to reduce the cost of supply chain financing.

121 Knowledge sharing in codevelopment project:

The Black Box case

Marie-Anne Le Dain, Valéry Merminod

This exploratory research aims at better understanding how knowledge sharing operates in co- development of new products integrated suppliers as black box.

In this case, design and manufacturing activities are driven by the supplier based on customer’s requirement specifications. The conceptual framework is built on the combination of early supplier involvement and knowledge management literature and three case studies. Our results especially underline the importance of knowledge translation for black box projects involving client and supplier in design phase.

143 Invest in the external legitimacy of the purchasing function!

André Tchokogué, Jean Nollet, Raluca-Mihaela Chiurciu

Based upon a literature review and interviews of Supply Directors and Vice- presidents of large North-American companies, this study shows that when Supply’s external legitimacy is high, it is in a much better position to develop fruitful collaborations in terms of quality, costs, and innovation. This research also illustrates how Supply’s external legitimacy supports the organization’s ability to develop and manage well customer-supplier relationships.
