The Truth about Gluten

More and more groceries and health food stores stock gluten-free products. That's good news for people with celiac disease*, who for health reasons should not eat wheat with gluten.

Yet paradoxically, most of the people who reach for gluten-free products don't have celiac disease or a sensitivity to wheat, Peter H.R Green, MD, director of the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University, told WebMD. "The market for gluten-free products is exploding. Why exactly we don't know. Many people may just perceive that a gluten-free diet is healthier".

ln fact, it isn't. "Unless people are very careful, a gluten-free diet can lack vitamins, minerais and fiber", says Green.

Emotional necessity or just a pet?

States balk as people daim need for 'everything from reptiles to insects'

BY FARAH STOCKMAN

A 26-year-old Starbucks barista in the suburbs of Tampa known as Vayne My- ers has suffcrcd from anxiety ever since he was a child. A co-worker suggested he try an emotional support animal.

So Mr. Myers bought a duck and named it Primadonna. The snow-white bird has worked wonders for his state of mind.

"Whenever I felt like I didn't matter in the world,"' he said, Primadonna would waddle ovcr and remind him that

"something does love you."

But Mr. Myers·s landlord objected and demanded proof that Primadonna was a meclical necessity and not simply a pet.

Mr. Myers provided a lettcr from a thcr- apist in Califomia, who spoke to him via a video chat, and lhen another note !rom a counsclor who met in pcrson with him

Remembering good times 'could reduce teenage depression'

Jan Sample, www.theguardian.com, January 14, 20:18.

Remembering the good times may help adolescents stave off dep:ression, according to research on teenagers who were at risk of mental illness because of chlldhood hardships.

Scientists at fue University of Cambridge found recalling happy events appeared to build their resilience to mental illness, suggesting tms could assist in preventing depression Iater in life.

"Really focusing on positive things that happened to you on a specific day may be helpful," said Dr Anne-Lama van Hannelen, the director of the risk and resilience group at the university. '"lt's important to remember that resi]ience isn't something you have or don't have. It is sometrnng you can bui]d, learn and improve."

Up to half of western children have experienced events t:h.at were traumatic or stressful enough to raise their risk of depression, research has shown.

[ ... ] Adrian Askelund at Cambridge, working with Van Harmelen, reanalysed mental health data gathered in the 1990s from 427 young people with an average age of 14. All were considered to be at risk of depression because of their emotional temperaments and life histories. ·•

The scientists looked at participants' responses to questions about recent ]ife e1ents, feelings of depression and any negative thoughts, such as believing they were useless. They also lôoked at the teenagers' replies when asked to recall specifi.c memories prompted by a given word, such as "happy".

All gave morning saliva samplest that were tested for levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Negative thoughts about oneself and higb moming cortisol were both linked to a higher risk of depression. The interviews and saliva tests were repeated a year later.

Tue researchers found those who recalled the highest proportion of specific happy times had fewer negative thoughts, and Jower moming cortisol leve]s. The act of remembering the good times seemed to build resiliience to depression, though only when there were precise events on a particular day.

Previous work has founid evidence that healthy people reminisced2 about the good times to cheer themselves up. The latest study, in the Nature journal, suggested it helped reduce the stress of hard time5> and boosted people's self-image, both ofwhich then improved resilience to depression.

A recent review from V an Hermel en and others found 20 "resilience factors" that could be improved to protect chlldren from depressfon. Sorne were linked to personality, witb low self-esteem and a tendency to ruminate both making children more vuhierab]e, while an engaged, hannonious and encouraging family reduced the risk of depression.

Marc Bush, the director of policy at Y oungMinds, a child and ado]escent mental health charity, said:

"We know that the circumstances tbat children grow up in have a big impact on their mental health, and those who have had difficult experiences in childhood, such as growing up in poverty, or being abuseci or neg]ected, are the most likely to develop mental health problems.

"As this study shows, creating happy memories can build self-esteem and be a great help to draw on during tougher times, which is why it's so important to build children's resilience from a young age.

Freeganism and Dumpster Diving

Staff, www.canyon-news.com, October 13, 2016.

LOS ANGELES-Freeganism is the act of taking discarded food and turning it into meals that can sustain individuals, families, and local charities. Its name combines the words "free" and

"vegan." However, identifying as vegan is no longer a necessary trait in being a freegan.

Freegans unite over the ideologies of reducing wastefulness, minimalism, and the evasion of capitalism and consumerism. Freegans choose to consume the 'undesirable' foods to protest food waste in America. The USDA'S Economie Research Service estimates that, "133 billion pounds of food in the available food supply goes uneaten each year."

The origins offreeganism can be traced back to the establishment of Food Not Bombs in Cambridge, Massachusetts during the early 1980s. The group initially protested nuclear investments by serving meals made entirely from scrapped ingredients outside of the Federal Reserve Bank. They questioned the financial resources that could be used for war yet not for food to feed starving peoples. Food Not Bombs have continued to fight against poverty. "We recover food that would have been discarded and share it as a way of protesting war and poverty," as stated on the Foot Not Bombs website.

Common demographics of freegans range from college-educated students to middle-class families.

Many freegans will venture to the dumpsters oftheir favorite health food stores like Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. While both companies have business agreements with local agencies to donate excess food, large amounts of food that do not meet their health standards are still often thrown out, according to the Los Angeles Times. Freegans will often go dumpster <living in the late evening as most of them work regular day jobs. Websites such as Meetup.com provides a group experience for freegans to go on food tours throughout the city.

Freegan Meetup group in Los Angeles.

Sorne speculation on the health risks of freeganism has been expressed by public health officials because of the potential contamination of different foods placed together. " ... A risk of foodboume illness from pathogenic bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria etc., especially in the summer, the dumpsters themselves breed bacteria, pests such as flies, roaches, rodents and some dumpsters are sprayed routinely by pest control operators with pesticides," stated Jim Chan, of the Health Inspector's Notebook. Freegan has a list of appropriate freeganism precautions on their website at:

http ://freegan.info/.

Freeganism is not only to promote self-awareness against consumerism, but to give back to the less fortunate. Many people are Freegan by choice and not because of financial burdens. They are able to use their yearly income to pay off mortgages or donate to homeless individuals.

lndonesia attempts ta count all its islands

lndonesia has embarked on the task of counting its islands in order to better protect its territory and marine resources. lt hopes to locate and name an additional 1,700 islands in time for the UN Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names in August. lndonesia wants to claim sovereignty and fishing rights in the waters surrounding the islands, many of which its neighbors also claim. The lndonesian government says illegal fishing in its waters is costing billions of dollars in lost revenue each year. A fisheries spokeswoman told the BBC: "Sixty per cent of islands in lndonesia don't have a name or officially have legal status, so they can easily be taken or claimed by another country."

lndonesia is the world's largest archipelago. At the last UN conference on geographical names in 2012, lndonesia registered 13,466 islands. A law in 1996 estimated that the number of islands was 17,508. The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea defines an island as, "a naturally formed area of land, surrounded by water, which is still exposed at high tide". A spokesman from lndonesia's Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries explained the scale of the task the counting team had. He

(26)

said: "We have to visit every one of these islands, and then we note the coordinates, the name, the meaning of the name, the history of the land and describe the landscape and its geographical history ... all that in great detail."
