ABSTRACT. - In this paper the Dirichlet
problem
is considered for awide class of
quasilinear elliptic equations
withC 1
coefficients indivergence
form. The main result is that if Q is an
arbitrary
bounded open subset of R"and 03C8
is a continuous function defined on theboundary
ofQ,
then there is a solution to theequation
in Q which assumes theboundary
datacontinuously
at allpoints
at which a Wiener condition is satisfied. This condition is satisfied at allpoints
of theboundary
except for a set ofcapacity
zero.Key words : Dirichlet problem, Wiener condition, elliptic equations.

Let Q be a bounded non-empty open set in !?"
(where
n >_2).
Thefollowing equation,
indivergence form,
will be studied:for
x~03A9,
where ... , an and b arelocally Lipschitz
functions onQ x R x tR".
We denote
by
the vector space
consisting
of all functionsf
on Q x I~ x with the property:for each compact subset E of Q x R x
(~n,
there exists a
K ~
0 and a8e(0, 1),
such thatfor all w, w’ E E.
Let E denote the set of all those
points
of 3Q at which aprescribed
Wiener condition is satisfied. The main aim of the paper is to prove
[under
the
assumptions (7)
and(8)
on(a)
and(b)]
thefollowing
two Dirichletresults:
(i)
For every continuousfunction B)/
on there exists a bounded continuous function u onQ U E,
such that u agreeswith B)/
onE,
u islocally
on Q and u satisfies(1) weakly
on Q.(ii) Suppose that,
in addition to the structure conditions(7)
and(8),
weassume that a is
C1 on Q,
for all
i, j
andThen,
for every continuous functionB)/
onaS2,
there exists a bounded continuous function u on Q UE,
such that u agreeswith Bj/
onE,
u isC2
onQ and u satisfies
( 1)
for all XEO.By a
result ofHedberg
and Wolf[HW],
itturns out that the Wiener condition is satisfied
everywhere
on 00 exceptpossibly
for a smallexceptional
set(a
set ofcapacity zero). Thus,
wheneverQ is a bounded non-empty open set, the above set E
necessarily occupies
all of 00 except for this
exceptional
set and therefore the function u in(i)
and
(ii) continuously
assumes the values ofB)/ everywhere
on aS2 exceptpossibly
for a set ofcapacity
zero. When a > n[where
a is determined in the structure(7)
and(8) below]
and Q is anarbitrary
bounded open set ofRn,
it is shown(2.17)
that the Wiener criterion is satisfied at everypoint
ofaS2;
hence for every continuous functionBj/
on aS2 and in each of the two cases discussedabove,
there exists a solution u of( 1)
which agrees withB)/ everywhere
on aS2.Although
the Wiener criterion has been usedby
severalauthors,
therehave been very few
general
results on the existence of solutions. Theoriginal
papers[Wl
andW2] by
N.Wiener,
of course, dealt with the existence andboundary regularity
of solutions toLaplace’s equation
andin
[Z],
existence of a solution is established when( 1)
is the Eulerequation
of a variational
integral.
In[MA] Maz’ja
dealt with the existence andboundary regularity
of weaksolutions,
butonly

In
[GZ]
it was assumed that a weak solution wasgiven

boundary points
where the Wiener criterion is satisfied. In the present paper, the
functions ai

thefollowing growth
conditions. In these a, ~, v are constants, such thatThe conditions are
required
to hold for allx E SZ,
Conditions
(7)

indivergence form, cf [GT], [LU]. However,
theirprimary
concern is to find solutions smooth up to theboundary
for the Dirichletproblem. Thus,
if their methods and results areparticularized
to theproblem
offinding
solutions whichonly
need to be continuous at the
boundary,
theirhypotheses regarding
bound-ary

areunnecessarily
strong.Typically,
Q is assumed tosatisfy

of theboundary [GT],

We use the same a as in
(7)
and(8)
in the definitions ofcapacity
andWiener
integral. Suppose
a n. When E is a bounded subset ofR",
wedefine the
capacity r (E)
of Eby
where the infimum is taken over all
non-negative
C~ functions cp on Rn, with compact support and (p(x) ~
1 when x E E.For
xoE80 1),
the Wienerintegral
iswhere
Bp (xo)
is the open ball of radius p and center xo.These definitions would be
unsatisfactory
whena >_ n,
so fora >_
n, we define the Wienerintegral by
where
r 2 p
denotes thecapacity
relative to a ball of radius 2 p and centrexo; i. e.
where the infimum is taken over all Coo functions cp on R" with
compact
support, spt p cB2 P (xo)
and cp(x) >

In the case where a =

this criterion isprecisely
the one usedby
Wienerin
[Wl
andW2].
The criterion forgeneral
a >1,
was introducedby Maz’ja
in
[MA]
and was also used in[GZ].
2. S PECIAL S ETS OF FUNCTIONS
We now
develop
theproperties
of certainspecial
functions which occurwhen
investigating continuity
at theboundary
of solutions to(1).
Thediscussion
given
here isperhaps
moregeneral
than is needed in thepresent
paper, but the full
generality
will be needed forsubsequent
articles onobstacle
problems.
Throughout
the paper, we willemploy
the familiar notation(Q)
todenote the space of functions whose kth order derivatives are Holder continuous with exponent a on Q. In
particular, C°~ 1 (Q)
is the space ofLipschitz
funtions on Q.Finally,
U{u:
spt u cQ}.
We shall recall the
following
definition from[MZ2].
2.1. DEFINITION. - Let r be a non-empty open set of
Rn,
1 a oo, C > 0 0. Let s denote thesymbol
+ or thesymbol .
We denoteby
the set of all
non-negative
functions v of such thatfor
all k >-
0 and allnon-negative Lipschitz functions 11
on Rn withcompact support
and 11 (x) = 0
whenx ~ r.
The sets S + and S - are
appropriate
fordeveloping
Harnackinequalities
and
establishing
Holdercontinuity
in the interior of the domain for asolution to a
partial
differentialequation
or an obstacleproblem. However, they
appear to beinadequate
forshowing continuity
at theboundary.
Therefore we introduce
special
subsets T + and T - of S + and S - .2 . 2. DEFINITION. - Let r be a non-empty open set of

non-negative
functions v of such thatfor

one can now obtain asubsequence
