Introduction

Les pièces de prestige présentées cette saison constituent un extraordinaire hommage aux créations de Saint-Louis dans la première moitié du XX^e siècle. Elles témoignent de la permanence du savoir-faire et de la créativité de la manufacture, même dans les temps les plus troublés. Elles réinterprètent le patrimoine de Saint-Louis, pour constituer le manifeste d’uneMaison entre tradition et innovation. Elles illustrent enfin le paradoxe d’une tradition séculaire, portée par une esthétique qui semble pourtant radicalement contemporaine.

Histoire

La maison Saint-Louis met àl’honneuren 2021 les pièces d’exceptionde son patrimoine avec la réédition des vases Guipure et Tartan, datées des années 1940-1950. Ces pièces de prestige illustrent de manière fascinante le paradoxe d'un Patrimoine séculaire, dont l'esthétique est pourtant radicalement contemporaine. Les deux vases se jouent du contraste entre la délicatesse presque textile du dessin de leurs motifs, et la force de la matière profondément taillée.

Guipure et Tartan sont le résultatd’uneprouesse technique : véritable tour de force, leur réalisation au chaud et leurs tailles complexes ont mobilisé onze artisans. Chaque pièce a sa spécificité technique :

Motifs de tailles

✦ A la surface de Guipure, dont le dessin d'origine date de 1946, s'enchevêtrent les tailles olives, biseaux et cordons pour tisser une dentelle de cristal. Ce type de taille particulièrement complexe et couvrante, appelé taille riche, est caractéristique de Saint-Louis. Elle y apparaît dans la seconde moitié du XIX^e siècle.

✦ Les tailles olives, cordons, biseaux et côtes creuses qui mordent profondément la surface de Tartan tissent une trame géométrique bien reconnaissable.

Témoignage éclatant des réalisations de la période moderniste, le vase Tartan reprend la singularité des tailles profondes des années 1950.

✦ Chaque pièce est en édition numérotée et limitée à 88 exemplaires.

The prestigious pieces presented this season are an extraordinary tribute to the creations of Saint-Louis during the first half of the 20^the century. They pay tribute to the timelessness of Saint-Louis’ know-how and creativity, which both persist even during difficult times.

Reinterpreting the heritage and manifesto of Saint-Louis, they unite tradition and innovation.

They illustrate the paradox between an age-old tradition and an aesthetic that nevertheless seems radically contemporary.

✦ Dragon heritage: an alliance of French know-how and a fascination with Asia in the early 1900s.

✦ Game: a collection expansion and mischievous tribute to the artistic movement of the Blue Rider (1911).

✦ Jean Sala heritage: the reissue of an exceptional piece presented by Saint-Louis at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1937.

✦ Guipure and Tartan heritage: reissue of pieces from the 1940s to the 1950s, spanning Art Deco and modernism.

History

2021 sees a reissue of the Guipure and Tartan vases from 1940-1950, in celebration of Saint-Louis’ exceptional heritage. These prestigious pieces illustrate a fascinating juxtaposition of age-old heritage with a radically contemporary aesthetic. The two vases play with the contrast between the textile-like delicacy of their patterns and the strength of the deeply carved material.

Description

Mouth-blown and hand-cut, these vases combine heritage, modernity and know-how.

Guipure and Tartan are the result of extraordinary technique: a real feat of the 11 artisans needed to create them, first over fire, then with intricate cuts. Each piece has specific techniques:

Cut patterns

✦ On the surface of Guipure–originally designed in 1946–the olive cuts, bevels and cords intertwine creating a crystal lace. This particularly complex and all- covering type of cutting–referred to as rich cuts–is characteristic of Saint-Louis.

It first appears in the second half of the 19^thcentury.

✦ The olive cuts, cords, bevels and hollow ribs cut deeply into the surface of Tartan, weaving a recognisable geometric pattern. A shining testimony to the achievements of the modernist period, the Tartan vase embodies the singularity of the deep cuts of the 1950s.

✦ Each piece is in a numbered edition limited to 88 copies.
