African journalists look to better news coverage of economic development issues

Addis Ababa, 22 March 2011 (ECA) - Over 70 reporters and editors from across Africa are expected in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Wednesday for a day-long session on how to better cover economic development issues on the continent, according to sources at the Information and Communication Service (ICS) of the Economic Commission for Africa.

The workshop that is being jointly organized by the Information and Communication Service (ICS) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the Directorate of Communications at the African Union Commission (AUC) will comprise presentations and interactive sessions.

Several high-ranking officials of the African Union Commission (AUC) and ECA, including Mr. Emmanuel Nnadozie, Director Economic Development and NEPAD Division (EDND) and Mr. René Kouassi, Director, Economic Affairs, AUC will address the opening session of the workshop, before giving way to lead presentations by development planners and practitioners on topical issues related to the 2011 edition of the Economic Report on Africa (ERA 2011). The theme of this year’s edition of ERA is Governing Development in Africa.

Topics lined up for the workshop include: Leveraging Opportunities for Accelerated Growth: Prospects and Policies for the Next Decade; Rethinking the Role of the State in Africa’s Development; Transition to a Green Economy; Health Financing in Africa:

Challenges and Way Forward; and Dissecting the Economic Report on Africa. Seasoned media development experts, Prof. Nixon Kariithi from South Africa and Mr. Tunde Fagbenle will guide discussions on reporting challenges and useful practices to facilitate experience sharing among participants.

The workshop has been strategically scheduled to take place on the eve of the Fourth Session of the AU Conference of Ministers of Economy and Finance and ECA Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development to be held on 24 - 29 March 2011 according Mr. Yinka Adeyemi, ICS.

Ms. Habiba Mejri-Cheikh, Director, Department of Information and Communication, AUC will officially close the workshop.
