Civil Society Organizations undergo post-conflict training in Cote D'Ivoire

ECA Press Release No. 61/2012

Addis Ababa, 04 May 2012 (ECA) –The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) organized a three-day training from 3-5 April 2012 on Building the Capacity of CSOs in Post-Conflict Situations in Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), practitioners and experts actively engaged in conflict management and peace building.

In his opening message, Mr. Kuame Lacina, Director of Cabinet of the Ministry of Planning and Development of the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire said, “To understand conflict effectively, we must first identify, analyze, define and discuss the different levels at which they occur”. He also underscored the importance of the exchange of best practices, learning and experiences among and between CSOs working in different countries.

The main objective was to equip trainees with a basic understanding of the causes of conflict and the elements that define it.

This, according to the Governance and Public Administration Division of the ECA, is critical for Africa; and in particular, member states belonging to the ECOWAS region, where many countries are either in a state of conflict or undergoing post-conflict reconstruction.

Participants analyzed the on going post-conflict reconstruction in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Cote d’Ivoire;

discussed the current events in Mali in light of the country’s military coup d’etat; and the tumultuous electoral process that concluded peacefully in Senegal. The meeting underscored the importance of equipping CSOs to work effectively in the field in times of conflict, as well as during peace building and reconstruction.

The training attracted a carefully selected group of CSO representatives, experts and practitioners able to participate and provide critical thinking for a deepened understanding of the issues at hand.
