CALL FOR PAPERS

“Processes of Transmission in Migrant Families or Families with an Immigrant Background.

Different perspectives on the European Union States”

International and multidisciplinary conference: October 15-16, 2015 at the University Catholic of the West

, Angers (France).

Asking oneself questions on the concept of « transmission » in the field of sociology or history of immigration, one can refer to Max Weber’s observation: “All differences in ‘customs’ can feed a specific feeling of ‘honor’ and ‘dignity’ within those who carry them out. One can forget the original motives that gave birth to diverse lifestyles and the contrasts continue being perpetuated as

‘conventions’.” (Economie et Société, Vol.2, Pocket 1995, p. 128) Nearly a century later, can this observation still be considered as a topical subject? It is exactly this question that the conference offers to verify, summoning around the syntagm “process of transmission” the different disciplinary fields of migratory research.

This conference is the second part of a reflection that started in 2013. We had carried out in this first step an exploration of identity factors at stake in migration and transnational mobilities in the 20th and 21st centuries. After having highlighted the German-speaking territories in a transnational perspective, in relation to Central and South-Eastern Europe, the second part offers to widen the perspective to the whole of the European Union, in an international perspective, resolutely comparative. The aim is to go further into the reflection on identity dynamics, widening the horizon of research to the Western European States and European (South)-Eastern ones. At the center of Europe, France and Germany will be able to serve as a point of articulation for a more ample reflection, and more differentiated on a European scale.

Firstly, and from a theoretical point of view, it would be interesting to submit to a critical analysis the (more or less) new concepts in use in the scientific, political and societal speech: we would make sure to check the pertinence of the terminology “with an immigrant background”, “migrants”, “1st, 2nd or 3rd generation”, and the analysis frames it determines. Secondly, we would make sure to verify on a more practical or empirical plan, if these concepts are really operational to give an account of cultural transmission phenomena observable in the European Union States.

2 We will be able to think about the impact of the cultural origins of the parents for the transmission of certain “values” or cultural referents of one generation to the other. The following themes will also be studied, in the light of recent and current empirical studies:

- religious or ethnic identifications - systems of values

- positioning of genre

- fracture or convergence lines between parents and children.

Questions will also deal with the role of the institutional body in the strategies and the practices of transmission. We will try to determine, for instance, the institutional impact in terms of cultural

“heritage”, or the acquisition of new cultural referents. The aim will be, in this perspective, to try to establish if the transmission can be expressed in terms of renunciation or preservation, thus analyzing the processes and the forms of cultural hybridization at stake.

The reflection will concern European ethnology, cultural anthropology, history or micro-history, demography, human and social geography.

Finally, the conference will therefore aim at bringing together the numerous perspectives opened by migratory research by exploring:

- the rural and urban space - the private and public sphere - the individual and the collective - the masculine and the feminine

in order to try to identify and analyze the processes of transmission at work in European societies in the first decades of the 21st century.

The languages spoken at the conference will be French, German and English.

Communications must not exceed 20 minutes to enable a discussion of 5 to 10 minutes afterwards. A publication of the proceedings of the symposium is planned.

The proposals (abstract + short biography) should be sent to Gwénola SEBAUX

before March 13th, 2015.
