Solving a system graphically

Season 01 Episode AP12 Time frame 55 mins

Prerequisites :

Solveasystembyelimination.Lineequations.

Objectives :

Pratise the graphialmethod for solving asystem.

Materials :

Answersheets.

Graphed traing paper.

Line equations.

Slideshow.

1 – Find the other half of your system 10 mins

1. Eahstudentisgiven alineequationandhas todrawthe lineonasheetofgraphed

traing paper. It's importantthat everyone uses exatlythe same units, and better

if they plae the axes inthe same position.

2. A list of oordinateouples(9 or10) isprojeted onthe board.

3. Eah student has tond anotherone suhthat the solution ofthe system made by

their two equations isone of the oordinates.

4. One a pair is formed, the two students have to solve the system algebraially to

hek the solution.

2 – System solving contest 45 mins

Students work by pairs. Eah pair has to ndgraphially anapproximate solutionof the

systemmadebytheirtwoequations,thenhektheansweralgebraially.Then,theymove

on tomake other pairs with other students.

Students get a markatthe end of the session, depending onthe number of systems they

orretly solved.

Line equations

x − 2 y = − 9 2 x + y = − 8

x + y = 1

− 2 x + y = 7 2 x − y = 0

x + y = 6 2 x + y = 15

− 2 x + y = − 9 x + 5 y = − 4

x − y = 8
