ast December, when the media published photos of Viktor Yuschenko, a candidate in the Ukranian elections, with the head- line “POISONED” and put photographs of his face
“before” (handsome, young, glowing, immaculate) beside his face “after” (ugly, aged, raddled, pustu- lous), the whole world became interested in these elections, hoping that justice would be done. Now, several months later, there are few who could name the poison used and even fewer who could name the risks associated with his drinking—hepatic, pan- creatic, neurologic, and morphologic complications.
But no one has forgotten the pitiful, bloated, swollen face of the new president.
Th at incident shows how we think in our society and indicates the importance we place on surface appearances. In Shrek II, the audience is somewhat disenchanted when the main character, who has been changed into a handsome man by the sorcerer, becomes again at the end of the fi lm what he always was: comical and sympathetic, but nonetheless gross and ugly. Along the same lines, the wise counselor in the guise of the fox in St-Exupéry’s Little Prince says,
“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” His wise words have not extended to our modern world where Botox and plastic surgeons abound.
It is not surprising, then, that patients con- sult us often for various dermatologic problems.
In this issue, we publish two excellent system- atic reviews of the literature on treatment of acne and psoriasis, respectively, and four Dermacase articles to challenge your diagnostic skills in the Clinical Practice section.

orsqu’en décembre dernier, les médias ont diff usé les photos du candidat aux élections ukrainiennes, Viktor Yuschenko, surmontées du titre: «EMPOISONNÉ», en mettant côte à côte ses deux visages, celui «Avant» (beau, jeune, res- plendissant, immaculé) et celui «Après» (laid, vieilli, ridé, pustuleux), le monde entier s’est mis à s’intéres- ser à ces élections en espérant que justice soit ren- due. Or, quelques mois plus tard, rares sont ceux qui peuvent nommer le poison utilisé et encore moins les dangers associés à son absorption, complications hépatiques, pancréatiques, neurologiques et cance- rigènes, mais personne n’a oublié le pauvre visage bouffi , boursoufl é et malade du président.
Cet incident est à l’image de notre société et traduit bien l’importance que nous accordons à la beauté et l’apparence. Dans Schrek II, les spec- tateurs éprouvent un certain désenchantement quand le sympathique personnage changé en bel homme par la sorcière redevient à la fi n du fi lm ce qu’il a toujours été: un ogre certes drôle et atta- chant mais néanmoins gros et laid. Comme quoi, le sage conseil formulé par le renard au Petit Prince de St-Exupéry «On ne voit bien qu’avec le cœur.
L’essentiel est invisible pour les yeux» n’a pas été entendu dans notre monde moderne où Botox et chirurgies plastiques dominent.
Pas surprenant dès lors que l’on nous consulte si souvent pour divers problèmes dermatologiques.
