Introduction

Manufacturing techniques and trade po- ttery in the ancient world are of great archeological interest to provide infor- mation about technologi.ca1 level of va- rious cultures

.

Amoag analytical methods usually used in material science the Mbss- bauer spectroscopy at present is sn inte- resting way to obtain informations on the chemical and physical state of the iron.

These informations obtained from Messba- ner spectra on the pottery may to deter- mine the provenance and the manufacture of pottery.

The studied material was a n ancient pot- tery from the locality of the Eastern Slovakia. On the basis of aroheologi~al evidence this pottery belong to linear ceramic. Their age was estimated at about 10000 yers.

Experiments and results

We have investigated samples aproximately of the same age. Samples had various co- lor in inside and on the $m@z&~ae. We suppo- sed that &Bgfneps - contain a rest of the paint. The problem was to determine whe-

ther the surface layer contain a paint.

The samples w e m prepared from the pow- der separed from the inside and and from the surface at the room temperature with a spectrometer operating in the coastant acceleration mode. The source was 5 7 ~ 0

in rhodium matrix. Mbssbauer spectrum from the inside the sample is in Fig.1.

There are two components in the spectrum.

Creation of na~netio compo- nents is also dependent on the tias of heating: but under the 5 hours heat* the mount of non-magnetio components only decreas slightly. Therefore we oan conoaud lude that our samples from the inside of the pottery were not fired at the tonape- rature higher than 4 0 0 ~ ~ . These restilts are also in good ae;reemea~t with obtained X-ray data.

'Ibis indicated that the su- rface layer was added on the pottery and has other o r i g i n . These reeulta are also in good agreement with X-ray measurements.

Canclusion

Mbssbauer speotrosoppy results p r w i d e us iPfoxmations about the manufaotuzd.ng of linear ceramio. This kind of pottery w e r r probably not fired Bttt only drped and painted with material prepared sepa- rately. This conoluaion, however, omst

be substantiated by more detailed study of more samples.
