Dissimilar material joining is generally more challenging than that of similar materials, due to various factors such as the differences in chemical compositions and the physical and mechanical properties of the base metals welded.
In this current study, dissimilar metals weld between duplex stainless steel and low alloy steel, were produced employing tungsten inert gas process for the root pass and shielded metal arc welding process for the filler passes, using duplex filler metal. The resultant wedments were characterized for their microstructure and mechanical properties.
The welds obtained, have good mechanical properties, despite the appearance of a hard zone at the interface between the weld metal and the heat affected zone of the HSLA steel.
