TITLE: STATIC ELEX::TRICITY IN THE TAPE CANNISTER

PURPOSE: To suggest a way of inhibiting static electricity while using the metal tape cannister.

EFFECTIVE DATE: October 12, 1960

CONTENTS: When a tape is being read by the photoreader from a metal cannister, a static charge may be built up by the friction of the tape on the tape roller. This charge may cause the tape to fold improperly. When reading a lengthy tape, or when reading a loop of tape, it is recommended that the tape, the cannister interior, and the tape roller in the photoreader are sprayed with any commercial spray which is sold for the purpose of eliminating static electricity on phonograph records. This spray can be purchased at any record store or electronic supply house.

We have been using a spray called STATIK-SPRAY which sells for $1.19 for 12 ounces at a wholesale supply house.

It is hoped that this information will assist in running programs which are stored in a metal cannister and searched for by the computer.
