Evaluation of the hypoglycemic and antihyperglycemic activities of the palm wine extracts of the bark trunk of Musanga cecropioides and the fruits of Combretum micranthum in albino wistar rats ABSTRACT
Objective: The main objective of this study was to evaluate the hypoglycemic and antihyperglycemic activities of the two extracts of the bark trunk of the Musanga cecropioides (parasolier) and the fruits of Combretum micranthum (quinqueliba) combined with palm wine in albino rats of the wistar strain.
Methodology and results : The objective of the microbiological quality control was realized. Crude extracts of Musanga cecropioides and Combretum micranthum were characterized for the presence of secondary metabolites. The acute toxicity test was carried out according to the protocol of the guideline 423 OCDE.
The blood glucose levels of the rats were measured. The microbial quality of the various extracts is in line with the standards of preparations of herbal medicines. Musanga cecropioides extract has a dark red color and a higher yield than Combretum micranthum. Phytochemical characterization revealed the secondary metabolites of the various extracts. Limit tests at 2000 mg/kg and 5000 mg/kg doses in female albino rats of the wistar strain immediately after oral "gavage" and for the following 14 days showed no behavioral disturbances or deaths. The LD 50 is therefore greater than 5000 mg/kg. The reference molecule resulted in a significant decrease in blood glucose 30 min after "gavage" of the rats compared to the lot of the negative control and those who received the combined extracts. A decrease in blood glucose, but not statistically significant (p-value ˃ 0.05) was observed for the combined extracts at the doses tested at the 2nd hour, for the negative control as well as the positive control. However, this decrease was statistically significant (p-value < 0.05) at the 3rd hour at a dose of 5000 mg/kg body weight. The reference molecule resulted in a significant decrease in glycemia 90 min after "gavage" of the animals compared to the lot of the negative control and those who received the extracts. In addition, blood glucose continued to drop significantly (p-value < 0.05) in proportion to time. Furthermore, although there was also a decrease in blood glucose in the rats given the extract at both doses, no difference statistically significantly (p-value >
0.05) was recorded compared to the rats of the negative control.
Conclusion and applications of results: the combined extracts at the dose of 5000 mg/kg of body weight has a hypoglycemic and anti-hyperglycemic activity, which can justify the formulation of a traditional improved medicine.
