HAL is a multi-disciplinary open access archive for the deposit and dissemination of sci- entific research documents, whether they are pub- lished or not. The documents may come from teaching and research institutions in France or abroad, or from public or private research centers.

L’archive ouverte pluridisciplinaire HAL, est destinée au dépôt et à la diffusion de documents scientifiques de niveau recherche, publiés ou non, émanant des établissements d’enseignement et de recherche français ou étrangers, des laboratoires publics ou privés.

Laboratory of Mechanics and Acoustics, LMA, CNRS, UPR 7051, Aix-Marseille Univ, Centrale Marseille, F-13402 Marseille Cedex 20, France Team « Sound » - 50 people working on audible sound, including musical instruments

Overall goal of our research Investigate how the functionning of musical instruments depends on:

ü  the control parameters, adjusted by the musician during the play (e.g. blowing pressure, lips characteristics, vocal tract configuration, fingerings)

ü  the design parameters, fixed by the instrument maker (e.g. geometry, material) Various approaches

New instruments, e.g. « logical clarinet » (4) Influence of the inharmonicity of a saxophone on the

production of multiphonic sounds(1)

Adaptive maps of descriptors for numerical models(2) e.g. regimes of a saxophone model

ü  In vivo (instrumented instrument) and in vitro measurements (artificial mouth) ü  Real-time sound synthesis

ü  Numerical simulation and continuation ü  Analytical developments

Computer controlled artificial mouth

Real-time sound synthesis piloted through MIDI controllers
