To a
nondegenerate pencil ~
ofquadrics
in a(2 g
+1 )-dimensional projective
space one can associate ahyperelliptic
curve X of genus g. It has been known for over a decade that the Jacobian of X isisomorphic
tothe space of
(g - 1)-dimensional
linear spacescontained
in the intersec- tion ofquadrics of 0 (see [7,5]).
This kind ofrelationship
between the moduli spaces of bundles on X and space of linearsubspaces of P2g+1
related to a
family
ofquadrics parametrised by pl
has further beenstudied in
[5],
Theorem4, [4]
and[2]
for vector bundles and in[6]
forstable
orthogonal
andspin
bundles. In this paper 1study
the semistableorthogonal
bundles on Xgeneralizing
Theorem 3 of[2] (see
Theorem4).
The main result is the
following:
THEOREM: Let M be the space
of equivalence
classesof
semistableorthogo-
nal bundles F
of
rank n with i-action(compatible
with theorthogonal
structure on
it) of
afixed
allowable local type T over ahyperelliptic
curve Xof
genus 2. Let W be the setof
Weierstrasspoints of
X. LetQI
=03A3w~ WQw, Q2
=LWE WkwQw
bequadrics
on an even dimensional vector spaceLWE WCw,
whereCw
is a vector spaceof
dimension rwcarrying
anondegenerate quadratic form Qw, kw
aremutually
distinct scalars corre-sponding
to the Weierstrasspoints of
X and rw = dimensionof Fw .
Let R’denote the space
of subspaces of Y-Cw of dimension 1 203A3rw
which are maximalisotropic for QI,
and haverank
n with respect toQ2.
Then thequotient of R’,
in the senseof geometric
invarianttheory, by 03A0wO(Qw)
isisomorphic
toM.
This theorem is
proved
in§2.
In§4,
1 prove similar results for Clifford bundles. The idea of theproofs
is similar to that in[2]. However,
in[2]
one uses
explicitly
thespecial properties
of the i-invariantorthogonal
bundles of forms E ~ i*E and E 0 i*E. Such
special
forms arepossible only
fororthogonal
bundles of very low ranks. To overcome this diffi-culty
the definition of "irreducible bundles" is introduced(Definition 1.1).
The theorem is in factproved
first for irreducible bundles and thengeneralised by
induction.In
§3, properties
of some spaces of linearsubspaces
related to apencil
of
quadrics (including
those involved in the abovetheorems)
are studied.This
study
can behoped
to havegood applications
in future. Forexample, Corollary
3.5applied
to results of Professor Ramanan[6]
showsthat the moduli space of stable
spin
bundles F withZ/2-action
on ahyperelliptic
curve isnonsingular
if the dimension of the(-1)-eigenspace
of
Fw
forZ/2-action
is one for all Weierstrasspoints
w.§1.
Notations andpreliminaries
We will assume that characteristic of the base field is zero.
Let X be an irreducible
nonsingular hyperelliptic
curve. Let i denotethe
hyperelliptic
involution on X. We denoteby W
the set of Weierstrasspoints
of X as well as itsimage on P1.
We use h to denote both the line bundleOp 1 (1)
onP1
as well as itspull
back to X.DEFINITION 1.1: An i-action on a bundle E over X is a
map j :
E ~ i*Esuch that
i* j 0 j
= Id.If E is a vector bundle with
i-action,
then for w inW,
the i-action induces an involution on the fibreEw
of E at w. We denoteby E+w (resp.
Ew )
theeigenspace corresponding
toeigenvalue +1(resp. -1)
for thisinvolution. The i-action induces one on the
cohomology
groupsHk(X, E )
too. Let
Hk(X, E)+
andHk(X, E ) -
denote theeigenspaces correspond- ing
toeigenvalues
+ 1 and -1respectively.
We use similar notations forHk(X, E ) replaced by
the Euler characteristic~(E)
of E.Henceforth,
in thissection,
E will denote an0( n )-or SO(n)-bundle
with i-action.
DEFINITION 1.2: Let T be a fixed
topological 0(n) (or SO( n ))-bundle
withi-action. Then E is said to be of local
type
T if E istopologically i-isomorphic
to T.DEFINITION 1.3: An i-invariant subbundle of E is a subbundle of E invariant under the
given
i-action on E.DEFINITION 1.4: A bundle E is semistable
(resp. stable)
if everyisotropic
i-invariant
(resp. proper)
subbundle F of E hasdegree
less than orequal
to
(resp.
lessthan)
zero.We remark that an
0(n) (or SO( n ))-bundle
with i-action is semistable if andonly
if it is semistable as anorthogonal (or special orthogonal)bun-
dle
(Proposition 4.6, [6]). However,
there do existorthogonal
bundleswith i-action which are stable as
orthogonal
bundles with i-action but not stable asorthogonal -bundles (Example 1.35, [1],
Lemma1.8).
If E is semistable but not stable
(as
a bundle withi-action),
thenby
induction we can find a
flag
such that
N
areisotropic
i-invariant subbundles of E ofdegree
zero,Nj+1/Nj
andN~J/N~J+1
are stable vector bundles with i-actionfor j
=0,..., r - 1
andN,’ INr
is a stableorthogonal (or SO( n ))-bundle
withi-action. Then
grE,
the associatedgraded
ofE,
is defined as the bundleN1 ~...~ Nr/Nr-1 ~ N~r/Nr ~ N~r-1 /N~r ~ ... ~ E/N~1.
The bundlegrE gets
anorthogonal
structure as follows:N~J/N~j+1
andNj+1/Nj
aredual to each other and hence their direct sum carries a
non-degenerate quadratic
form with both these direct summands asisotropic
subbundles.On
Nr’ INr
there is anondegenerate quadratic
form induced from that onE. On
grE
weput
thequadratic
form which is a direct sum of these forms. The bundlegrE
isunique upto quadratic i-isomorphisms.
DEFINITION 1.5: Two semistable
orthogonal
bundles with i-action areequivalent
if their associatedgradeds
areisomorphic (as orthogonal
bundles with
i-action).
REMARK: The local
type
of anO(n) (or SO( n ))-bundle
with i-action iscompletely
determinedby
itstopological type
as anO(n) (or SO(n))-
bundle
(without i-action)
and theintegers (rw = dim E-w),
w inW,
Ebeing
the associated vector bundle(see Proposition 1.48,
pp. 76-87[1]).
DEFINITION 1.6: An
orthogonal
bundle(or special orthogonal bundle)
with i-action is irreducible if it has no trivial sub-bundle with induced trivial i-action.
LEMMA 1.7: Let F be a semistable
orthogonal ( special orthogonal)
bundleof
rank n with i-action. Then
( i )
F is irreducibleif
andonly if H0(F)+ = 0,
( ü ) if F is
notirreducible,
then F isequivalent
toln - m
~Fm’ Fm being
anirreducible
orthogonal
bundle with an i-action andIn - m
a trivial bundleof
rank n - m with trivial
i-action, m
n.PROOF:
(i) Suppose
F isreducible,
i.e. F contains a trivial bundle N with triviali-action;
thenH0(F)+~H0(N)+~0. Conversely,
suppose thatH0(F)+~
0. We shall show that F is reducible. Let N be the subbundle of Fgenerated by H0(F)+.
Then N is i-invariantbeing generated by
invariant sections. We claim that N is trivial. Since F is a semistable bundle of
degree
zero,degree N
0. On the otherhand,
as N isgenerated
by sections, degree
N 0. It follows thatdegree
N = 0 and hence N isgenerated by
nowherevanishing
sections. Therefore N is trivial. The i-action on N is trivial as it isgenerated by
i-invariant sections. Thus F is reducible.(ii)
Let F be a reducible semistableorthogonal
bundle with an i-ac-tion.
By part (i), H0(F)+~
0 andH0(F)+ generates
a trivial subbundle N of F with trivial i-action. If N isnon-isotropic
in the sense that thesubbundle N’
generated by
N~N~ is zero, thenF=N~N~ (see
theproof
ofProposition 4.2, [6]).
If N’ -=1=0,
N’being isotropic
i-invariant weget
theflag
0 c N’ c N’ 1 c Fshowing
that F isequivalent
toN’~N’*
~ N’~/N’
as anorthogonal
bundle with i-action. We claimthat N’ is trivial. We first show that N’ has
degree
zero. Consider the exact sequence0 ~ N’ ~ N ~ N~ ~ M ~ 0
where M is the subbundlegenerated by
N +N~.
In view of thesemistability
ofF, degree N’ 0, degree
M 0.But,
from the exact sequence,degree
N’ +degree
M =deg
- N +
deg -
N~ =2(deg N)
asF/N~ ~ N*,
so thatdegree
N’ =degree
M = 0. We will now show that N’ is
generated by
sections so that N’ will be trivialbeing
ofdegree
zero. Notice that the evaluation map X XH0(N’) ~
N’ isinjective
asH0(N’)
cH0(N)
and X XH0(N) ~
N is aninjection (in
fact anisomorphism).
Thus dimH0(N’) rank
N’. Weonly
have to show that this is an
equality.
Consider 0 ~ N’ ~ N ~ L ~ 0.Note that L is semistable as N is so and
03BC(N’) = 03BC(N) = 03BC(L).
The map X XH0(L) ~
L is aninjection,
for if a section of L vanishes at apoint,
itwill
generate
a line subbundle of L ofpositive degree contradicting
thesemistability
of L. Thus dimH(L)
rank L.Thus,
This finishes the
proof
of the claim that NI is trivial. Thus F isequivalent
to
(N’
~N’*)
fl3F’,
where( N’
~(N’)*)
is a trivial bundle with triviali-action,
F’ ~N’~/N’
is anorthogonal
bundle with ani-action, ~ being
an
orthogonal
direct sum. If F’ isirreducible,
we arethrough;
otherwiseby
inducation on rankapplied
to F’ weget
the result.LEMMA 1.8: For every
integer
n, there exists a stablespecial orthogonal
bundle with
i-action, of
rank n.PROOF: The case n = 1 is trivial. For n =
2, though
there does not exist astable
special orthogonal bundle,
there do exist stablespecial orthogonal
bundles with i-action. For
example,
take E = L ED L* with L *i*L, deg
L = 0. Sincedeg
L =0,
L* ~ i*L so that there is an i-action on Eobtained
by switching
the direct summands. E isclearly
semistable. E is stable since any i-invariant subbundle of E ofdegree
zero has to be L orL* and the latter are not i-invariant. Thus we may assume
that n
3.Let X
be the universalcovering
of X. Let r be the group for thecomposite covering ~X~P1.
It is known that r isgenerated by
(2 g

relationsx 2

relationsX1Y1X2Y2...XgXg
=
Xg Xg... Yl Xl.
The induced involution on ’7T isgiven by Xi ~ X-1i, Yi ~ Y-1i
for all i =1,...,
g. The bundles associated to irreducibleunitary representations
of r inSO( n )
are stablespecial orthogonal
bundles ofrank n with
i-action,
hence it suffices to construct irreducibleunitary representations
p of r inSO( n ) for n
3. Let V be a vector space of dimension n and B asymmetric
bilinear form on V.Case

LetM,

Since m is even,M,
N ESO(n).

unitary representation
of r inSO( n ).
We have to check that p is irreduciblei.e. {M, N}
is an irreducible subset i.e. no nonzero element in the Liealgebra
ofSO( n )

i.e.D = M,
weget 13

weget ÀiÀjf3’j = 03B2ij, 03BB-1l03BBj03B1ij=03B1ij
so that03B1ij=0~i~j
and03B2ij=0~i, j.
Since a is skewsymmetric,

Thus A = 0.Case

it can be checked thatM3, N3, P3

Lemma1.7,
F is irreducible iffH0(F)+ =

is zero. Hence it suffices to show that therepresentation p

p with the inclusionSO( n ) - GL( n )

representation.
Case
(i): n

it follows thatp

for every n. 1 do not know acomplete
classification of allowable local

It is easy to see that in case rw = 0 for at least2g

there exist no irreducibleunitary representations.
In case n =2, using
the matriceswith
03BB2 ~ 1,
it is easy to see thatprovided Lrw

there exist irreducible stableorthogonal

It is not difficult to construct
examples
of allowable localtypes

zero in view of thecohomology

(b)
Consider the commutativediagram
The lower

qx(H0(E)-, H0(E

which shows thatH0(E

For the second
part,
let s EH0(X, E)-

q’x(s(x), t(x))
= 0 for all t inH0(X, E)- where qx

theorthogonal

H0(X, E)- ~ Ex
is onto.
For,
then we shall haveq’x(s(x), Ex)
=0,
whichimplies s(x)
= 0as
q’x

onEx .
Since s isi-antiinvariant,
we have alsos(ix) = 0.
Thuss~H0(X, E ~ L-1x ~ L-1ix) = H0(X, E ~ h-1)-.
It re-mains to show that the evaluation map ex is onto. Consider the exact sequence
The associated

exact sequencegives
By
Serre’duality H0(X, F)+ ~ H1(X,

the latterisomorphism being noncompatible
with i-actions as i-actsby ( -1)

while it actstrivially
onh w
for all w in W. Since F isirreducible, H0(X, F)+ =
0 sothat H1(X, E~h-1)-=0 as E = F~hg. Thus H0(X, E)- ~ (Ex ~ Eix)-
is onto. Now
under the map
y~(y, -iy)
and thefollowing diagram
commutes,showing
that ex is onto.(c)
The assertion(i)
follows fromProposition
2.2[2].
Wesimilarly

The assertions
(ii)
and(iii)
now follow from this and thepart (b).
We recall that a
subspace V
ofY-C,,
is semistable(respectively properly stable)
for the action ofnO(Qw)
on03A3Cw

if for every properfamily ( Nw ) w
whereNw
is anisotropic subspace

we have(resp. )
dimV (see Proposition
5.3[6]).
PROPOSITION 2.2: Let F be an
orthogonal
bundle withi-action, E
= F ~ h g andH1(E)- = 0. If
the spaceH0(E)-
embedded in03A3Cw
viaquadratic isomorphisms (nw)w is semistable,
then F is a semistableorthogonal
bundle.PROOF: Follows
similarly
asProposition
5.6[6] by taking
a = hg.Let
(R’n)ss
be the set of semistablesubspaces V
of03A3Cw
of dimension1¿
dimCw
which are maximumisotropic
forQI
and have rankexactly n
for
Q2.
FromPropositions
2.1(C)
and2.2,
it followsthat f-1((R’n)ss) = ln ~ f-1(R’ss)
whereln
is the subset of Iconsisting
of irreducible bundles.PROPOSITION 2.3: The map
f
induces abijection from
PROOF: We shall now construct a map
f’:(R’n)ss~I’n
which will be shown to be the inverse off.
LetV ~ (R’n)ss.
We claim that thecomposite YC,,,
~L-1w
~ X X03A3Cw ~ X
X03A3Cw/V
is asurjection.
We haveonly
to check that atw0 ~ W, Image(03A3Cw
0L-1w)
+ V =Y-Cw
i.e.03A3w’~w0Cw’ + V = 03A3Cw. By
Lemma5.5, [6]
we have V ~Cw0 = 0. Taking orthogonal complements
forQ,
andnoting
that V is a maximalisotropic
space for
Q,
so thatV~ = V,
we have V +03A3w’~w0Cw’ = Y-Cw.
Define V’by
Now,
thequadratic form q
on X XY-C,,
induces aquadratic
form on03A3(Cw ~ L-1w)
which vanishes at each w and hence factorsthrough
aquadratic
form with values inh2g+1 ~ L-2W = h-1.
Its restriction to V’vanishes
completely
on V’ at a and ia and hence induces anh - 2-valued
quadratic
formQa
on V’. We claim thatQa
has constant rank on X. Theadjoint
form(§2.5 [2])
of theh -1-valued
form has values in h and its restriction to thepolar Vo
vanishesat a, ia
and factorsthrough
aquadratic
form with values in the trivial line bundle.Since %
is the trivialbundle,
this form has constant rank onV0.
Our claim now follows in thesame way as
Proposition
2.6[2]. Define f’(V) = (F ~ V’/V’~
0h, (nw)),
where
V’~
denotes theorthogonal complement
of V’ in V’ for thequadratic
formQu
and nw:Ej - Cw
areisomorphisms
obtained from the fact thatV’w
containsCw
0L-1w.
We now claim that
H1(F~hg)-=0.
Since i acts on the canonical bundleby -1
at each Weierstrasspoint, using
Serre’duality
and(V’/V’~)* ~ V’/V’~
0h2,
we havehl(F
0hg)-= h0(V’/V’~)+.
Writ-ing
down thecohomology
exact sequence associated to the exact se-quence
and
taking
invariants and anti-invariants weget H0(V’)=0, h1(V’)- = g(03A3rw/2), h1(V’)+ = L:rwI2.
SinceV’~ eV’, Ho( y’ 1 )
=0. Using
the Rie-mann-Roch theorem and
Proposition 2.2, [2],
since(V’~w)- = 0,
weget
h1(V’~)+=0.
From thecohomology
exact sequence associated to the exact sequence 0 ~V’~ ~
V’ ~V’/V’~ ~ 0,
ontaking invariants,
we haveH0(V’/V’~)+ = 0,
i.e.H1(F
0hg)-=
0.LEMMA 2.4 : There is a canonical
isomorphism of
V ontoH0(F~hg)-
suchthat the
following diagram
commutes. The lower horizontal map here is the evaluation at w.
PROOF: See Lemma
3.6, [2].
Note that on F~hg =V’/V’~ ~ hg+1,
thei-action is the same as that on
V’/V’~.
Since i-actsby - 1
onL W,w
forall w, we have
(F~hg)-w
=(V’/V’~ oLw)’
andH0(F~hg)- = H0(V’/V’~ ~ LW)+. As H1(F~ hg)-= 0,
fromProposition 2.2, [2]
andLemma
3.6, [2],
it follows that there is a canonicalisomorphism
from Vonto
H0(F
0hg)- making
the abovediagram
commutative.Lemma 2.4 shows that the evaluation map
H0(F
0hg)- ~ 03A3w(F~hg)-w
is aninjection
and the spaceH0(F~hg)-
embedded inY-Cw
via03A3(nw)
is in fact V.Thus f o f ’
= Id.Also,
since Vitssemi-stable,
it follows fromProposition
2.2 that F is semistable.Finally, Proposition 2.1, (c), (iii)
shows that F is irreducible. We now
proceed
to showthat’ 0 f = Id.
Let(F, (nw))~I’n, f(F) =
H0(F~ hg)- = V,
say. From the commutativediagram
it follows that the natural
map V’
- Vcomposed
with the evaluation map V ~ E = F 0 h g is zero at all w in W and at x not inW, V~
=V’~x
= H0(E~h-1)-
embedded inH0(X, E)-
via the divisor x U ix(see Proposition 2.1).
Hence thecomposite
induces a mapV’/V’~ ~ Lw -
E.This is a map of vector bundles of the same rank n and same
degree
2 gn,(as V’/V’~
has anondegenerate
form with values inh-2),
so to showthat it is an
isomorphism,
it isenough
to show that it is ageneric isomorphism.
We claim that it is anisomorphism
onX - (W~a~ia)
i.e. the map
H0(X, E)-/H0(X, E
~h-1)-~Ex
inducedby
the evalua- tion is anisomorphism.
From theproof
ofProposition
2.1(b)
we havewith kernel
hence the claim follows.

This functor isrepresentable by

Themap f :

the set of semistablepoints
of R’. We will show below(Proposition 2.7)
that P’ is saturated for the action ofH 03A0O(Qw)
sothat the
image

of P’. Here H denotes the reductivesubgroup

themorphism f2/p’:

LEMMA 2.5 : Let E = F ~
hg,
Fbeing a
semistableorthogonal
bundle. The evaluation map embedsH0(E)- in LE:;.
LetEl be a
subbundleof E
with03BC(E1)=2g.
ThenPROOF:
(i) Clearly, H0(E1)-~H0(E)-~03A3(E1)-w,
so we haveonly
toprove the
opposite
inclusion. First notice thatEl, E
andE/El
are allsemistable vector bundles with IL =
2g,
therefore we have the exactcommutative
diagram.
Let p : E ~
E/El
be the canonicalsurjection.
We have to show that fors E
H0(E)-
if p 0s(w)
= 0 for all w, thenp o s = 0
i. e.p’( s )
= 0.Now,
po
s(w)
= 0 for all wimplies that p o s belongs
toH0((E/E1)~ L-1W).
Since
E/El
is a semistable vector bundle with Il =2g,
we haveH0(E/E1~L-1W)=0. Thus p o s = 0.
(ii)
The bundleEt
is definedby
the exact sequence 0 ~E~1 ~ E ~ E*1 ~ h2g ~ 0,
where the latter map is thecomposite
of theisomorphism
E ~ E*
~ h2g given by
thequadratic
form with the canonicalsurjection
E* ~
h2g ~ E*1 ~ h2g.
I t follows thatIl(Et)
=2 g
and henceEt
is semi-stable. The
proof
of(ii)
is now identical to that of(i).
(iii)
From the exact sequence in the aboveproof
of thepart (ii),
wehave
Now, El
andEi
~h2g
are both semistable vector bundles with i-action of the samerank, degree
anddim(E1)-w = dim(E*1 ~ h2g)-w
for all w.Therefore, by Proposition
2.2[2],
we have dimH0(E1)- =
dim
H0(E*1 ~ h2g)-. Thus,
dimH0(E1)- +
dimH0(E~1)- =
dim
H0(E)-. Using (i)
and(ii), part (iii)
now follows.PROPOSITION 2.6 : Let E = F ~ hg with F a semistable

Thenf(E1

is also a semistable
subspace of 03A3Cw.
PROOF : Let
N = 03A3(E1)-w, N~ = 03A3(E~1)w)-, V = f(E).

we have another commutativediagram
