RESOLUTION OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE

LEAGUE OF RED CROSS SOCIETIES ON PARTICIPATION IN TUBERCULOSIS CONTROL

The Director-General has the honour to bring to the attention of the members of the Executive Board the following resolution of the Executive Committee of the League of Red Gross Societies;

"The Executive Committee,

Realizing the importance of the International Tuberculosis Campaign now being carried out as a joint enterprise between Scandinavian Societies, United Nations International Children•a Emergency Fund, World Health Organization and the Ministry of Health in each participating country,

Recommends that the National Societies in the respective countries take as active a part in the campaign as possible and

Authorizes the Secretary-General to accept the membership of the League in a sub-committee recommended by the Expert Committee с il Tuberculosis of the World Health Organization to deal with the future planning of the campaign, on the full understanding that the independent position of the Red Cross shall be completely protected,"

The following is quoted from the letter of transmittal of the above resolution to the World Health Organizations-

"The League's part will be to study together "with the National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies the best way in which they can co-operate in this fight. Thus the League will act towards the National Societies as the WHO towards the governments and the International Union towards the national organizations against tuberculosis. To obtain this it was felt most essential that the League receive a recognized official status as a member of this sub-committee, and at the recent meeting of the Executive Committee of the League a resolution to this effect was adopted.

You will find a copy of the resolution attached. We would like to stress that, as stated in the resolution, the independent position of the Red Cross will be completely protected."

The resolution was based on the recommendation of the WHO ЕзфеИ Committee on Tuberculosis, (Report on Fourth Session, WHO/TBC/15

"áíll T h e Committee further recommends that the full resources of WHO, the Joint Enterprise and affiliated non- governmental organizations can best be utilized by calling together, at suitable intervals, representatives of the organizations which will be working jointly in tuberculosis control„ The organizations includei

(a) World Health Organization (b) Joint Enterprise

(c) International Union against Tuberculosis (d) League of Red Cross Societies"

It is suggested that the following resolution might be adopted:

The Executive Board,

(1) NOTES the Resolution adopted by the Executive Committee of the League of Red Cross Societies concerning the international tuberculosis campaign;

(2) EXPRESSES its appreciation of the recommendation made to the National Red Cross Societies to take as active a part as possible in this campaign;

(3) APPROVES the recommendation of the Expert Committee to call together, at suitable intervals, representatives of the organizations which will be working jointly in tuberculosis control
