Special issue dedicated to selected papers presented at the 6

th

European Drying

Conference (EuroDrying 2017)

I am pleased to present this special issue, which contains selected articles previously presented at the 6th European Drying Conference (EuroDrying 2017), which is a part of the series supported by the Working Party on Drying (WPD) within the framework of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE).

EuroDrying 2017 took place in Liège, Belgium, June 19–21, 2017. It was jointly organized by University of Liège and Free University of Brussels, with the support of the Dutch Working Group on Drying (NWGD). This conference is the continuation of its predecessors, which were held successfully in Greece (2003), France (2007, 2009, and 2013), Spain (2011), and Hungary (2015). For this 6th event, we had the ambition to strengthen the industrial audience. Two special sessions had therefore been dedicated to industrial issues and case studies in order to highlight or to identify intersections between research in academia and industrial needs. One can also notice that, for the first time, we decided to make this event a “Woman Friendly Conference”: five conference-fee waivers were offered based on the application files. A best poster award dedicated to Women in Drying Research (ex aequo for Evelien Vaessen and Gaëlle Tanguy) was also given in addition to the Nutricia Danone Research Award (Wael Ebrahim).

Here are the main figures of the event:

. 141 submitted abstracts, from which 47 were selected for oral presentation and 65 for poster presentation . 5 plenary lectures

. 130 participants, 30% of whom were industrial delegates

. 26 countries represented

. 10 regular sessions and 2 special industrial sessions This special issue of Drying Technology gathers some of the best papers presented during the conference. The selection was very strict, with 30% of the submitted full texts finally accepted.

Besides the scientific aspects, the participants had the honour to be welcomed by the governor at the provincial palace. The banquet that took the form of a cruise gave the opportunity to the delegates to discover Liège by night.

The 7th EuroDrying Conference will be organized in 2019. The host will be selected during the next IDS in Valencia.
