Acadia has selected Kathleen Burke, Paul Doerr, John Thomas, and Glenn Wilkinson for limited terni appointments. Its Planter Studies Conférence wiU be held in October. Margaret Conrad will be on leave from 1996-98, and Gillis Harp is on sabbatical 1996-97. Lois Valley-Fischer has retired. Acadia expects an appointaient in Modem European History. At Brandon University, Dale Brawn (D.Jur.) has been appointed to a term position. Faculty hâve declined in number.

Carie ton University reports that Deborah Gorham has been made Director of the Pauline Jewett Institute of Women’s Studies. David Dean will be Visiting Associate Professor in 1996-97 and Susan Whitney has a joint term appointaient in Women’s Studies /History. Among its faculty, Kerry Abel (Research Achievement Award); Jacob Kovalio (Japan Foundation); Dominique Marshall (Chapman, London); Brian McKillop (Research Award, Cdn Society for Study of Higher Education); Mark Phillips (Folger Library Fellowship); and Frank Szabo (SSHRC Research Grant) hâve ail received research awards or fellowships recently. Larry Black, Bruce Elliott, Peter King, Sonya Lipsett-Rivera, Dominique Marshall, Del Muise, and Mark Phillips will be on sabbatical during the winter term. Kerry Abel and Brian McKillop will be on research leaves 1996-97. John Bellamy, Carman Bickerton, Foster Griezic, Naomi Griffiths, Keith Johnson, Raymond Jones, and Sydney Wise hâve retired. Anticipated appointments will be in 20th C. Europe or Early Modem Europe. The Department is preparing for the 40th anniver- sary of its History Graduate Program and for the Third Carleton Conférence on the History of the Family in May. Total faculty hâve decreased.

Concordia’s John Laffey and Irving Smith hâve retired. Norman Ingram and Stephen Scheinberg will be on sabbatical during the Winter 1997 term; Walter Van Nus will be on sabbatical (6/96 - 5/97). Total faculty hâve decreased by two.

At Dalhousie University, Cynthia Neville has been made Assistant Dean (Extemal). Michael S. Cross was awarded the Dalhousie Alumni Association Award for Excellence in

Teaching. Sean Cadigan has been appointed to a tenure track position in Canadian History and Océan Studies, and Philip Zachernuk to one in African History. Jack Crowley and Gregory Hanlon will be on sabbatical (1/97 - 6/97). Judith Fingard will be on leave (1/97 - 6/97), while Daniel Woolf will be on leave (9/96 - 4/97). Faculty numbers hâve increased by 1.75.

At Dawson College (CEGEP), P. Hidas has retired. A. Gerdymatos is on leave.

From Glendon College, Yves Frenette has been made Co-ordinator, International Studies. Andrée Courtemanche has been re- apointed Spécial Assistant Professor 1996-97. Irving Abella and Ian Gentles will be on sabbatical 1996-97. W.R. Augustine and W. E. Echard hâve retired. Numbers of faculty hâve declined.

Lakehead University’s Victor Smith has been made Associate Professor. Ronald N. Harpelle has been appointed to a term posi­ tion in Latin American and Third World History. Patricia Jasen (7/96-6/ 97) and Bruce Muirhead (9/96-7/97) are on sabbatical. Ernest Zimmermann has retired. Faculty numbers are stable. Obituary: Thomas B. Miller

At Laurentian University, Matt Bray has been made full Professor, Janice Liedl Associate Professor, and Pierre Cameron Assistant Professor. Marshall B astable hasbeen appointed as a maternity-leave replacement. Graeme Mount, Pierre Cameron, and Dieter Buse are on sabbatical. Faculty numbers are stable.

McGill University has invited G. Friesen of St. Paul’s College, University of Manitoba, as a visiting professor for 1996-97. P. Boulle (9/96-8/97); J. Hellman (1/97-6/97); and R.D. Yates (9/96-8/97) are on sabbatical. Andrée Levesque and G. Woloch hâve retired. Faculty hâve decreased in number.

McMaster University’s Robert Johnston has been re-appointed as Department Chair for 1996-97. V. Aksan, K. Cruikshank, and E. Haley hâve been made Associate Professors. Roy Porter gave the Wiles Lecture on Sept. 9, 96. The Annual Graduate Colloquium (“Religion and Family in North America”) will be held October 24. E.H. Beame, J.P.

Campbell, PS. Frite, and H. Levenstein hâve retired. The Department anticipâtes a limited term appointaient in Modem (post 1890) German History. Faculty numbers hâve declined. Obituary: T.E. Willey

D. Vickers of Memorial University has received the Lewis Gottschalk Prize and hon- ourable mention for the Wallace Ferguson Prize, and John Dunning has received a prize for the “Best Book by a Young Scholar”. Irene Zadnik has been appointed to a term position and Peter Hart’s term has been renewed. J. Bumsted (Manitoba), J. Conway (Sociology, Regina), and Dolores Janiewski (New Zealand) are ail invited for 1996-97. L. Fischer (9/96-12/96); W. Reeves (1/97-4/97); A. den Otter (1/97-4/97) will be on sabbatical; T. Bishop-Sterling (1-4/97) will be on spécial leave. This year, Memorial will host the CHA meeting of the Newfoundland Historical Society (Cabot and his World). Faculty numbers are stable.

At Mount Allison University, David Torrance has received the Paré Award for Excellence. The Department will host the annual meeting of the Atlantic Association of Historians 10/96. One appointaient in Modem European History is anticipated. Faculty numbers are stable.

Donald Akenson of Queen’s has received the Canada Council Molson Prize and James Pritchard the John Lyman Book Award and Keith Matthews Prize (from the Canadian Nautical Research Society). David Eltis has been promoted to Professor and Karen Dubinsky to Associate Professor. James Carson has been appointed to a tenure-track position in American History. Kathryn Brammall and Tamara Myers are SSHRC post-doctoral fellows for 1996-97. Karen Dubinsky and James Stayer will be on sabbat­ ical during the Fall 1996 term; W. Fitzhugh Brundage, Harold Mah, and Gerald Tulchinsky in the 1996-97 year; and David Eltis during the Winter 1997 term. Faculty numbers hâve declined.

Paul Lavigne is teaching a course in Médiéval History and Andrew Thomson one in Canadian History at St. Jerome’s College. Kenneth McLaughlin will complété the second year of his sabbatical 6/97. Rev. J. Wahl will be on leave (1/97-7/97). Faculty numbers are stable.

Saint Mary’s University held an International Multidisciplinary Confér­ ence “Scotia and Nova Scotia” in Sept. 1996 and a Japanese Studies Association Conférence, “Changes, Challenges and Choices” Oct. 4-6. Wallace Mills will be on sabbatical in 1996-97; Colin Howell will be on half-sabbatical starting 1/97.

At St Thomas, Sheila Andrew has been promoted to Associate Professor; and Heidi Macdonald (Canadian survey), Sharon Myers (Modem Canadian), Deborah Styles (Atlantic Canada), and David Wilson (Early Modem European) hâve received term appointments. Larry Shyu and Steven Turner, both from the University of New Brunswick, are invited for 1996-97. Dan Gleason will be on sabbatical (7/97- 6/98); Bill Spray will be on sabbatical (1/98-6/98). Sessional positions in Canadian/Atlantic and United States History are anticipated. There has been no increase in full-time équivalent faculty.

Simon Fraseris Mark Leier has been made an Associate Professor, and Jo-Anne Mancini and Charlene Porsild hâve received term appointments. The Wallace K. Ferguson award has gone to R. Boyer; the John M. Templeton award to Hannah Gay; and the Senior KiUam (2nd year) and the Hilda Neatby Prize to J. Parr. Jo-Anne Mancini (20th C. U.S.); and Charlene Porsild (Cdn Social) hâve limited term appointments. D. Cole, R. Debo, E. Ingram, M. Leier, J. Parr, and M.L. Stewart will be on sabbatical. Total faculty hâve declined in number.

At Trent University, John Syrett is Acting Dean for 1996-97. Joan Sangster has been made Professor and Bruce Hodgins has retired. Olga Andriewsky will be in the Ukraine on a Fulbright Fellowship. Elwood Jones and John Jennings will be on sabbatical in 1996-97. Total faculty hâve declined in number.

The University of Alberta’s Kenneth J. Munro is now Acting Associate Dean of Arts. John E. Foster has received the Faculty of Arts Teaching Award and John Langdon the McCalla Research Professorship. E. Ann McDougall has been made a full Professor and Susan L. Smith and Frances Swyripa hâve been appointed Associate Professors. R. Nagel (Latin Literature) and C. Mackay (Roman History) hâve been appointed to tenure track positions, and R. Connors (Early Modem British), J. Bothwell (British Médiéval), C. Pollock (Canadian/World), Æ Ede (Science, Tèchnology, Medicine), and S.

Cipko (20th C. World) hâve term appoint­ ments. Invited for 1996-97 are M. Dmitriev and M. Zimmer. L. Cormack and J. Martin are on sabbatical until 6/97. The Classical Association of the Canadian West will hold a meeting March 14-15, “Education and Récréation in the Ancient World”. The Department expects to announce positions in Modem German History; Pre-Settlement Western Canada; and East Asia. The number of professors has declined.

At the University of British Columbia,

Dianne Newell is now the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies. Leonidas Hill has retired. Christopher Friedrichs is now a full Professor and Robert McDonald an Associate Professor. Joy Dixon has received an award for University Excellence in Teaching and Paul Krause has received an NEH Hampton Fund award. Anne Gorsuch has received a SSHRC post-doctoral fellowship, and Joy Dixon, Caroline Ford, William French, Anne Gorsuch, Diana Lary, Robert McDonald, William Wray, Steven Lee, Peter Ward hâve received SSHRC grants; Caroline Ford has been awarded a Fulbright. Joy Dixon, Christopher Friedrichs, Paul Karause, Allan Smith, and Peter Ward are on leave. 12 sessional positions hâve been filled. The Department will hold a World History Lecture Sériés Feb. - March 1997. Its total number of professors has decreased.

UBC’s Faculty of Education will hold a Canadian History of Education Association Biennial Meeting in February 1998. Jean Barman has received a Faculty of Education Teaching Award and Neil Sutherland has retired.

The University of Calgary’s David Marshall has received a Teaching Award. John Ferris has been made Professor and Warren Elofson and Douglas Peers are now Associate Professors. Terry Martin has been appointed to a term position in Russian History; Roger Daniels, a Fulbright Scholar, has been invited to lecture. Doug Francis (7/96 to 6/97), HolgerHerwig (7/96 to 6/97), Mark Konnert (1/96 to 12/96), David Marshall (7/96 to 12/96), and Sheldon Silverman (1/96 to 12/96) are on sabbatical; Margaret Osler is onleave (7/96 to 12/96). The Department expects to appoint a U.S. Historian this year. Its number of professors has declined by one.

Guelph’s C.A. Wilson received Honourable Mention for the Wallace K. Ferguson prize, for A New Lease on Life. Barbara Hanawalt (Minnesota), Luca Codignola (Genoa), Phil Buckner (UNB), Graham Walker (Queen’s), Carol Edington (St. Andrew’s), James Hammerton (Australia), and Randall McGowan (Oregon) will be guest professors. Mary Rogers has retired; Gilbert Stelter and Ron Sunter are on research leave Fall 96 - Winter 97. Guelph will host the Scottish Studies Colloquium 96/5/10 and the Tri-University Conférence, 96/10/26. The number of professors has declined.

At Lethbridge, Malcolm Greenshields and Luke Kwong hâve been promoted to the rank of Professor. David Mirhady (Ancient History) and Renée Soulodre (France; Latin America) hâve term appointments.

Manitoba’s J. Bumsted has received the 1996 Margaret Mc Williams Medal (popular book category) for The Winnipeg General Strike of 1919; Mary Kinnear has received the CHAjs Régional History Prize for

Stambrook received the 1995 University of Manitoba Outreach Award. Oleh Gerus and Ian Kerr hâve been promoted to the rank of Professor. Natalie Z. Davis will be lecturing Oct. 7-10. Ian Kerr and John Wortley are on leave 7/96 to 6/97; Peter Bailey, Barry Ferguson, Henry Heller and Tom Nesmith from 1/97 to 6/97. There is no change in the overall complément of professors. On leave is A. Leger- Anderson (1/97-6/97). It held a colloquium, “Symbols, Myths and Images of the French Révolution”, in honour of James Leith, Sept. 18-21, 1996. Since 1994 the department has seen a decrease of 3 positions.

At the University of Saskatchewan, Brett Fairbaim has been promoted to Professor and Gordon DesBrisay to Associate Professor. Ivo Lambi and Ted Regehr hâve retired. Valérie Korinek (Modem Canada) has received a tenure-track appointaient. The Department anticipâtes an appointaient in 18th/19th C. Continental European History. Larry Stewart, Dave De Brou, and Jim Handy will be on sabbatical.The Presidents’ Lecture Sériés will hear professors Worster, Tsurumi, Parr, Morton, Kealey, and Umerick during the course of the year. The total number of professors has declined by 1.

Toronto’s Jacques Komberg and Lynne Viola hâve been promoted to the rank of Professor and Nakanyike Musisi is now Associate Professor. William Callahan has been reappointed as Principal of Victoria College. Jennifer Mori (Early Modem British), Lori Loeb (Modem British), Sean Hawkins (African) hâve tenure-track appointments; Barbara Clow (Canadian) has a terni position. Since Nov. 1995, M. Bliss has received the Killam Research Fellowship; P. Blanchard a Connaught Fellowship; Paul Grendler a Connaught; W. Goffard, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada; M. Marrus, the Jus Memorial Human Rights Prize and the U of T Alumni Association Award of Excellence; and J. Noël the Sir John A MacDonald Prize. Invited for 1996-7 are Joy Parr, Ron Chemow, Michael Goodich, Michihias Hosokawa, Dirk Hoerder, and Amnon Linder. On leave are K. Bartlett (1/97-6/97); C. Berger (7/96-6/97); P. At the University of Victoria, David Zimmerman has been promoted to the rank of Professor; Lynne Marks and Elizabeth Vibert to the rank of Associate Professor. John Lutz (Pacifie Northwest) has received a tenure- track position. Alison Prentice (Education; Women) will be Adjunct Professor. Invited professors for 1996-7 are Tamara Hareven (Family) and Geoffrey Parker (Military). On leave are M. Grant (7/96-6/97); P. Baskerville (1/97-6/97); B. Dippie (7/96-6/97); and T. Saunders (1/97-6/97). An appointaient in Early Modem History is anticipated. There has been no change in the number of faculty.

The University of Western Ontario’s

University Students’ Council has awarded Certificates of Teaching Excellence to Drs Hall, Hohner, Murison, Neary, Sea, Simpson, Steele, and Trimble. Professors A Sagomonian and M. Basset hâve been invited to lecture during 1996-7. On leave is R. Hohner (7/96-6/97); Jean Matthews has retired. Planned meetings include “Moravians and Amer-Indians in the 18th C.” There has been no change in the total number of faculty.

At Windsor, Jacqueline Murray is now the Director of the Humanities Research Group; Brian Owens has been appointed Archivist; and Kathleen McCrone is Dean of Social Science. On sabbatical is Tina Simmons (7/96-12/96). Udo Sautter has retired. Total number of professors has decreased by two.

Robert J. Young is the CASE Canadian University Professor of the Year (1996) at the

University of Winnipeg. Royden Loewen is the Chair of Mennonite Studies. D. Lindsay (Canadian/Social Science); Susan Gray (Education); Alison Gillmor (Art); Kathryn Young (Canadian Social) hâve received term appointments. In 1996-7, invited professors are Peter Geller and Laura Peers. On full sabbatical are J. Brown, C. Majzels; half- sabbaticals for D. Burley, WJ. McDermott,

and D. Stone. David Dyck and Harry Loewen hâve retired. One new tenure-track position is anticipated in Women’s History.

Maidman has been promoted to the rank of Professor; E. Cohen and W. Wicken hâve received tenure-track positions; A Loftus (Ancient Greek) has received a term position. R. Law (Stirling) and M. Goodich (Haifa) are invited for 1996-7. Retiring this year are J. Bosher, R. Cook, S. Eisen, and V. Hunter. York anticipâtes appointments in 20th C. Canadian and Ancient Greek Social history. On sabbatical are C. Armstrong (sabbatical); S. Kafka- Forstner; K. McPherson; E. Melville; and D. Trotman. M. Ladd-Taylor is on matemity leave. Fellowship holders R. Hoffman (Princeton); P. Lovejoy (Killam); I. Steinisch (Arts Faculty) will also be on leave.
