Oct. 14-16. 4th Conférence on Canadian Business History. The 4th Conférence on Canadian Business History, hosted by Trent University, will be held in Peterborough from Friday, 14 October to Sunday, 16 October 1994. Program participants from several disciplines and from across Canada will présent new research that addresses principal established thèmes - the organizational synthe- sis, régional patterns, American ownership, and the rôle of the state — and newer thèmes — including relationships between formai and informai économies, local business structures as social and éco nomie institutions, professional dimensions of business develop ment, and gendered éléments in the business System. May 5-6. The Center for the History of Print Culture in Modem America présents a conférence entitled “Print Culture in a diverse America” to be held in Madison, May 5-6,1995. This conférence will assess readers and their texts in the “other” America. Papers which illuminate the books, newspapers, periodicals, etc., pro- duced by racial and ethnie minorities, women, political radicals, sexual minorities and others since 1876 will be the focus. The Center welcomes both case studies of single group expériences and those that compare the historical sociology of print in the lives of a number of groups too often placed on the periphery of power. May 12-14. The Edmonton and District Historical Society and the University of Alberta History Department are co-hosting a confér ence at the Edmonton Convention Centre on 12-14 May 1995 to mark the 200th anniversary of Edmonton’s founding. Proposais are invited on a wide variety of subjects that relate to Edmonton’s history, including pre-settlement, fur trade, religion, éducation, business, labour, sports and récréation, women, the capital city, the Edmonton-Calgary rivalry, and the future ofthe city. Both popular and academie présentations are welcome. Two publications are planned in association with the conférence. The first, which will be published prior to the conférence, will provide biographies of a number of prominent Edmonton founders and leaders. The second will consist of a sélection of the best papers presented at the conférence. The deadline for papers to be included in the founders and leaders publication is September 1994. On se placera donc à deux points de vue: celui du producteur de la biographie, depuis la biographie historique et critique jusqu’ à la fiction biographique sous ses diverses modalités, l’intérêt se portant principalement sur ce qu’a de particulier ce type d’acte d’écriture. June 8-11. The Quiet in the Land? Women of Anabaptist Traditions in Historical Perspective. The first academie confér ence on Anabaptist women’ s history is planned for June 8-11,1995 at Millersville University in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The purpose of the conférence is to bring together historians and other scholars of women to examine women’ s expériences in Anabaptist traditions from the 16th through the 2Oth centuries (Amish, Mennonite, Hutterite, Brethren, and other communal societies and Pietist groups). The Coordinating Committee encourages propos ais that represent a broad range of disciplines and consider a spectrum of différence in such areas as race, class, région, sexual- ity, and nationality. Proposais for single papers/presentations should include a 500-word abstract and a one-page curriculum vitae. Le thème du congrès sera: Immigration et ethnicité dans un contexte comparatif. Ce sujet vise à stimuler la recherche comparative et innovatrice dans le domaine de l’immigration et des études ethniques. Les communications conjointes de deux chercheurs ou plus d’une même discipline ou de disciplines différentes sont les bienvenues. Elles peuvent porter entre autres sur des sujets tels que le sexe, la classe sociale, la politique, les politiques gouvernementales ou la structure familiale. Nous invitons également les propositions traitant de sujets qui ne sont pas comparatifs, mais innovateurs tels que la deuxième génération d’immigrants, la religion, la culture ou la période après

The Association for Canadian Studies will be hosting a conférence during the Leamed Societies at the Université du Québec à Montréal. The topic of the conférence will be: Immigration and Ethnicity in a Comparative Context. This subject is intended to stimulate comparative and innovative research in the field of immigration and ethnie studies. Joint papers by two or more authors from the same or from different disciplines are most welcome. Papers could deal with such topics as gender, class, politics, government policy, family structure, among others. We also invite submissions that, while perhaps not comparative, deal with innovative topics, such as the second génération of immigrants, religion, and culture, or with the period after the Second World War. Graduate students are also invited to submit a proposai. Some support for students is providedunderthe ACS Student Participation Programme.
