Chapitre I : Accrétion et différenciation planétaire
G. Questions non-résolues
La présence d'anomalies dans les roches d'Isua a été confirmée par de nombreuses études
(Bennett et al., 2007; Boyet et al., 2003; Caro et al., 2006, 2003; O’Neil et al., 2015; Rizo et al., 2015, 2013, 2011) et ces signatures constituent ainsi une preuve robuste de la différenciation précoce du manteau terrestre. Toutefois, de nombreuses questions relatives à la nature et à l'évolution des réservoirs silicatés primordiaux restent en suspens. En premier lieu, on peut noter qu'il existe très peu d'applications du système couplé 146,147Sm-142,143Nd en dehors de la ceinture d'Isua, ce qui pose la question de la représentativité des âges obtenus. Les mesures effectuées par Bennett et al. (2007) sur les roches du complexe d'Itsaq et d'Akilia (Groënland) montrent des signatures en 142Nd/144Nd et
143Nd/144Nd légèrement plus radiogéniques que celles mesurées dans les roches d'Isua. Sur la base de ces résultats, Bennett et al., (2007) calculent un âge modèle de différenciation de 4.53 Ga, en faisant l'hypothèse que la composition isotopique de la Terre silicatée est identique à celle la composition des chondrites ordinaires (c.a.d. inférieure de 20 ppm environ par rapport à la valeur de la Terre "accessible"). Ce postulat apparait aujourd'hui peu plausible (voir section C) et les résultats obtenus par Bennett et al (2007) correspondent en réalité à un âge modèle de 4.33±0.03 Ga si l'on considère un manteau primitif de composition similaire à la Terre silicatée actuelle. Cet âge est significativement plus jeune que celui déduit de l'étude des roches d'Isua. On peut ainsi se demander si l'enregistrement Archéen en 142Nd reflète un évènement unique à la fin de l'accrétion, ou, alternativement, un processus de différenciation continu ou épisodique au cours des 500 premiers millions d'années de l'histoire de la Terre.
Une seconde interrogation concerne la nature et l'évolution de la première croûte terrestre complémentaire au réservoir mantellique échantillonné par les roches d'Isua. Plusieurs études ont récemment rapporté la présence d'anomalies négatives de 142Nd dans des roches Protérozoïques du craton du Khariar (Upadhyay et al., 2009), les dykes Mesoarchéens d'Ameralik (Rizo et al., 2012)
(Groënland), la komatiite de Schapenburg (Puchtel et al., 2016), les gneiss d'Acasta (Roth, 2014), et la ceinture supracrustale de Nuvvuagittuq (craton du Supérieur,(O’Neil et al., 2008)). Les résultats des deux premières études n'ont toutefois pas été confirmés et semblent être le résultat d'artefacts analytiques (Gautam et al., 2017; Roth et al., 2014; Saji et al., 2016). La présence d'anomalies négatives de 142Nd dans la komatiite de Schapenburg semble indiquer la contribution de matériel enrichi Hadéen, mais les analyses 147Sm-143Nd et 176Lu-176Hf indiquent une source mantellique appauvrie143Nd et 176Hf positifs). Le découplage des systèmes courte et longue période rend l'interprétation de ce signal ambigue, et ne permet pas l'application du système couplé 146,147
Sm-142,143Nd. Enfin, la signification chronologique des anomalies négatives de 142Nd dans la ceinture de
Nuvvuagittuq reste débattue. Il a en effet été suggéré que ces anomalies résultent de la décroissance in situ du 146Sm après mise en place des roches de la ceinture. Cette interprétation impose alors un âge de

cristallisation de 4.28 Ga, faisant de la ceinture de Nuvvuagittuq la plus ancienne formation géologique connue. Toutefois, les études géochronologiques de la ceinture de Nuvvuagittuq sont en contradiction avec l'hypothèse d'une mise en place au cours de l'Hadéen (Cates et al., 2013; Guitreau et al., 2013; Roth et al., 2013), et suggèrent un âge de mise en place plus récent, il y a 3.77 Ga. La signification chronologique de ces anomalies ainsi que les implications géodynamiques seront discutées dans le chapitre II de ce manuscrit.
Enfin, les mécanismes à l'origine de la différenciation précoce du manteau restent mal contraints. L'enregistrement Archéen en 142Nd est classiquement interprété comme résultant de la différenciation globale du manteau lors de la cristallisation d'un océan magmatique, vraisemblablement suite à un impact géant (Caro et al., 2005). Toutefois, le système 146,147Sm-142,143Nd ne permet pas de distinguer les processus de cristallisation fractionnée de mécanismes de fusion partielle et cette interprétation repose donc en grande partie sur des considérations chronologiques. Ainsi, l'âge modèle estimé pour la différentiation de la Terre Silicatée est similaire à celui des plus anciennes roches lunaires, une observation à priori cohérente avec une cristallisation tardive des océans magmatiques terrestres et lunaires après l'impact géant. Néanmoins, en l'absence de signature géochimique spécifique à la cristallisation de phases minéralogiques profondes (majorite, ou pérovskite), il est difficile d'attribuer avec certitude l'origine du fractionnement Sm/Nd à la cristallisation d'un océan magmatique. Cette question sera développée plus avant dans le chapitre VI. de ce manuscrit.
