OPERATION OF THE LABEL LIST UTILITY

Load the Label List Utility (05-00)

To load the utility, respond to the following prompt:

1. If necessary, insert the diskette containing the utility into a diskette drive.

2. Enter SYSLIST as the program name.

3. Enter the device address.

4. Enter the number of the partition where the program will

execu~e. (If a partition number is not entered, the number defaults to the number of the partition associated with the keyboard at which you are working.

5. Press the Enter key.

The system loads the utility and displays the label list option prompt (34-01).

Select the Label List Option (34-01)

When the utility is loaded, the following prompt is displayed:

1. Select an option:

• Enter a 1 to list the data set labels that are on a diskette or disk.

• Enter a 2 to list all the data set names that are on a diskette or disk.

• Enter a 3 to list the contents of the label directory.

• Enter a 4 to list a volume label and format number.

2. Press the Enter key.

The insert diskette prompt (34-02) is displayed.

Note: The following sequence of prompts is the same (except where noted) for every label list option.

After you select the option number, the following prompt is displayed:

If necessary, insert the diskette to be listed from into a diskette drive. Enter the device address and press the Enter key.

If the diskette to be listed from is volume-protected, the

volume-protected prompt is displayed. Enter the owner ID and press the Enter key.

If you selected option 1 or 2 at prompt 34-01 and the diskette or disk you specify has no data set labels to be listed, an error

occurs. Press the Reset key to redisplay the insert diskette prompt (34-02).

When the Enter key is pressed and no error occurs, the specify output device prompt (31-03) is displayed.

Specify the Output Device (34-03)

The following prompt is displayed after the insert diskette prompt:

Enter a 1 to list the labels on the display screen, and press the Enter key. The list of labels (34-07) is displayed.

Enter a 2 to print the labels, and press the Enter key. The printer 'device address prompt (34-04) is displayed.

Enter a 3 to list the labels .to a diskette or disk data set. The diskette data set name and device address prompt (34-09) is

displayed.

Display the Labels on the Display Screen (34-07)

Press the Enter key each time you want additional labels on the diskette or disk to be displayed.

If you are displaying directory information, after the last display of information, the additional directory information prompt (34-08) is displayed.

If you are not displaying directory information, after the last display of labels or names, the utility-completed prompt (34-78) is displayed.

The first line of the prompt shows the total number of data sets on the diskette or disk.

The second line of the prompt shows the number of data set header labels that remain unused on the volume. If additional space remains) these header labels can be used for additional data sets.

The third line of the prompt shows the total number of K bytes remaining to be used on the volume. These bytes follow the last end-of-extent value (lK = 1024).

The fourth line of the prompt shows the format number of the

diskette or disk. The format number will be 1-9 for diskettes, or A for disk. (See "Diskette Formats" on page 8-2).

After you press the Enter key, the utility-completed prompt (34-78) is disp layed.

Specify Printer Device Address (34-04)

If you select the print option in the specify output device prompt (34-03), the following prompt is displayed:

1. Enter the printer device address.

2. Enter the print control information to format the output:

• The number of characters to be printed per line. (If you specify 80 characters per line the information will be printed on two lines per label. Sample listings are provided at the end of this chapter.)

• The total number of lines per page (blank and printed).

• The total number of printed lines per page.

If you leave any of these fields blank, the default values are used.

3. Press the Enter key. If no printer is installed, an error occurs. After you press the Reset key, the specify output device prompt (34-03) is redisplayed.

If you are printing a listing of data set names or a directory, the printing begins and the listing in process prompt (34-06) is displayed.

Diske'tte Data Set Name and Device Address (34-09)

If you select the diskette option in the specify output device prompt (34-03), the following prompt is displayed:

Enter the name of the diskette or disk data set where the output is to be listed, and the device address. (The output diskette cannot be the same as the input diskette. However, the output disk may be the same as the input disk.) Press the Enter key.

If the output diskette is volume-protected, the volume-protected prompt is displayed. Enter the owner ID and press the Enter key.

If the data set you specified already exists on the diskette, the system attempts to use it for output. If the previously existing data set has an incorrect record length (i.e., other than 128) or is write-protected, an error occurs. Press the Reset key to redisplay the above prompt. When the Enter key is pressed and no error

occurs, the listing in process prompt (34-06) is displayed and the output is written to the specified data set following any previously existing data (i.e., EOD).

Data set allocated unless the maximum disk allocation table is configured.) When output is completed, any unused space in the output data set is released and is available for allocating other data sets.

When option 3 (directory list) has been selected and the output is to diskette or disk, the SYSLIST utility places a record ID code in positions 125-127 of each record. These record ID codes are:

The following prompt is displayed while the listing is being printed or written to diskette or disk:

SYSLIST in process.

If the Cmd, End-of-Job key sequence is used to stop the printing or the printing is otherwise interrupted, the printer may continue to print data momentarily in order to empty the printer's buffer.

When the listing is completed, the utility-completed prompt (34-78) is displayed.

Utility Completed (34-78)

After all the labels are listed, the utility-completed prompt is displayed, allowing you to exit from the utility or restart the utility. If you restart the utility, the label list option prompt

(34-01) is redisplayed.

The following figures show the more commonly used fields of the labels. See the Diskette General Information Manual for more information about diskette labels.
