Installing the iPod Software

Dans le document by Tony Bove and Cheryl Rhodes (Page 69-72)

To install iPod Software for Windows from the CD-ROM, do notconnect the iPod to your computer — leave it disconnected, but be ready to connect it when the instructions say so. Follow these steps first:

1. Double-click the CD-ROM icon in Windows Explorer.

The CD-ROM’s AutoPlay feature starts the installation process; if the installer doesn’t open automatically, right-click the CD-ROM icon in the My Computer window and choose AutoPlay from the shortcut menu that appears.

2. In the first dialog that appears, choose the language that you want to use and then click OK.

The language shortcut menu lets you choose from quite a number of lan-guages. After clicking OK, the InstallShield Wizard, so familiar to Windows users, takes over and launches the installer.

3. Click Agree for the license agreement and type in your iPod serial number. Then click Next (or Cancel to quit).

Follow the instructions to type in your iPod serial number, and click Next for each window. The CD-ROM installation performs the same process as installing iTunes and the iPod software separately.

4. In the Choose Destination Location pane, select a destination folder for the iPod Updater, and then click Next.

The iPod folder contains the iPod Updater program. By default, the installer assumes that you want to store the iPod folder in the Program Files folder of your C: drive (which is just peachy, unless you like to defy the system designers at Microsoft by putting programs in other places).

Click Browse to use Windows Explorer if you dare locate a different folder.

After selecting a folder (or keeping the default), click Next. The installer displays the next page, which asks you to connect your iPod to check its hard drive format.

5. Connect your iPod and reformat its hard drive if necessary, then press Next.

6. When the iTunes Setup Assistant appears, click Next again.

Connect your iPod as described in Chapter 1. The installer checks to see if it needs to be reformatted, and if it does, it reformats the iPod for Windows. When finished, press Next, and iTunes starts up with the iTunes Setup Assistant dialog inside the iTunes window. You can skip to the next section on using the iTunes Setup Assistant.

If you purchased an older model without a CD-ROM, or a model with an out-dated CD-ROM, you can install iPod Software for Windows, which is available on the Internet. To download iPod Software for Windows and install the down-loaded version, go to Apple’s iPod download page on the Web (www.apple.

com/ipod/download) and click the iPod software link. Follow the instruc-tions to download the installer to your hard drive. Pick a location on your hard drive to save the installer.

To install the downloaded version of iPod Software for Windows, do notconnect the iPod to your computer — leave it disconnected, but be ready to connect it when the instructions say so. Follow these steps first:

1. Double-click the iPodSetup.exefile, which you can download from the Apple Web site.

2. In the first dialog that appears, choose the language that you want to use, and then click OK.

The language menu lets you choose from quite a number of languages.

After clicking OK, the InstallShield Wizard, so familiar to Windows users, takes over and launches the installer.

3. Click Agree for the license agreement, and then click Next (or Cancel to quit).

4. In the Choose Destination Location pane, select a destination folder for the iPod Updater, and then click Finish.

The iPod folder contains the iPod Updater program. By default, the installer assumes that you want to store the iPod folder in the Program Files folder of your C: drive (which is just peachy, unless you like to defy the system designers at Microsoft by putting programs in other places).

Click Browse to use Windows Explorer to locate a different folder if you dare.

After selecting a folder (or keeping the default), click Finish.

After the installer finishes installing the iPod Updater, follow these steps:

1. Start iPod Updater by choosing it from the iPod menu in your Start menu.

Launch the iPod Updater program by double-clicking the program icon or choosing it from the Start menu (Start➪iPod➪iPod Updater). The iPod Updater displays “Plug in an iPod to update it” in the iPod Updater window. You can now plug your iPod into the computer.

2. Connect your iPod and wait for iPod Updater to recognize it.

Connect your iPod as described in Chapter 1. The installer checks to see if it needs to be reformatted; if it does, it activates the Restore button shown in Figure 2-10. This leaves you no other option except to restore

the iPod to its factory condition, which includes reformatting the iPod for Windows. If your iPod is formatted for Mac use, it displays N/A for Name and Capacity. Refer to Figure 2-10.

3. Click the Restore button to restore the iPod, and click Restore again to continue.

After you click Restore, the iPod Updater displays a warning dialog.

Click Restore to continue with the restoration. iPod Updater erases and reformats the hard drive and restores the iPod to its factory settings.

When it finishes restoring, it displays “Restore is complete. Please dis-connect iPod from PC and dis-connect it to the external power supply to allow firmware reflash.”

4. Disconnect the iPod from the computer and connect it to AC power.

The iPod needs AC power to do a firmware refresh. (Firmwareis soft-ware encoded in hardsoft-ware.) Disconnect your iPod carefully, and then connect it to your power adapter. The iPod performs a firmware refresh operation that takes a few minutes. After the operation is complete, the iPod Updater displays its opening dialog.

5. Connect the iPod to the computer again.

iPod Updater should now recognize your iPod.

6. Close iPod Updater, but leave your iPod connected.

Close the iPod Updater by clicking the X-marked close box in the upper-right corner. Since your iPod is still connected, iTunes should start auto-matically and display the iTunes Setup Assistant dialog inside the iTunes window. If iTunes doesn’t start automatically, start iTunes and wait for it to recognize your iPod. If your computer or iTunes has trouble recogniz-ing your iPod, see Chapter 27.
