-The data are collected by the Police des renaoignements et des frontieres, . processed Id-- the same department and published by the Mihistere du tourism, Rue Khelifa Bougka'iia, 4^» Alger. The collected data are taken from the embarcation and landing records.

The following definitions are applied:

Visitor: Any person entering Algeria not permanently resident there or who does not exercise any paid occupation there. ■ ■

Tourist: A temporary visitor spending at least 24 hours in Algeria- and

the purpose of whose visit may be classified as: ■ ■ '. ■. ^

pleasure (leisure, holiday, health, study ,religion# ©ports); .. ■■

business, family mission, conference. ....

Algerian nationals residing abroad are temporarily exempt from this

definition, , ■

v&cursionist: Any temporary visitor whose stay does not exceed 24 hours in Algeria, including cruise passengers, but excluding those travellers who, legally speaking, do not set foot on Algerian soil, and residents of the frontier area working in Algeria.

Persons in transit: Any temporary visitor having obtained at the frontier a five day transit visa, if he is travelling overland, or a three day visa if

he is travelling by air. '

Residentsi These are travellers other than non-residents and cruise passengers. All nationals are considered as residents.

Statistics have, been kept since 1964 and may be obtained from the. Ministfere du

tourisme-2» Hotel statistics

The Ministere du tourisme is responsible for collecting the data and for processing and publishing them.

In addition to the hotels, the "tourist completes" are also required to furnish information, although the figures for the latter are presented separately.

The obligation to furnish information is based on legal provisions and regulations.

The list of accommodation establishments is kept up to date and shows the

type, ^category capacity and location* '

-Figures on volume of business refer to both arrivals and nights spent.

They are broken down according to type, category and location of accommoda tion establishments, by month of arrival and hotel night, by Algerian and

foreign nationality, and for foreign nationals, by country of residence. ' "

Room and bed occupancy rates are calculated. The two rates are calculated according .to. the type and location of accommodation establishments- These statistics may be obtained from the Ministere du totirisme. They have been ! compiled in their present form since 1968.

: There is no available information' on foreign exchange statistics, other tourist statistics, or on sample surveys.

CAMEROON : Frontier check statistics

The data are collected and processed by the Delegation generale a la surete nationale, Yaounde, but are not published..

The data are taken from landing cards.

The definitions adopted are based on the type of visa and consequently, differ from the IUOTO definitions. The Commissariatgeneral au tourisme is, however, considering adopting these definitions.

The statistics collected refer to both entries into and exits from the

country. . . .

!;hen the department of the Commissariat general au tourisme has developed a system of collecting the statistics- at the frontiers, the figures will be

broken down: . ■

by month, nationality, means of transport, length of stay, purpose of visit 2. Hotel statistics

The Commissariat general au tourisme, B.P. 266, Yaounde, is responsible for

collecting, processing and publishing these statistics.

Hotels, lodges and tourist hootolsare all required to furnish information.

At present, lists of accommodation establishments' show the place, type and capacity of the establishment, and consideration is being given to including the category of establishments.

The figures on the volume of business refer to both arrivals and nights spent. They will bo broken down by -;ype, category and location of accommodation establishments, by month and by residents and non-residents of the country.

A resident is considered to be any .foreign or Cameroon national who normally, or for business reasons, resides in the Cameroon.

Non-resident: any foreign national- coming to the Cameroon (temporarily)

for any reason other than to follow a1paid-.occupation (.,.).

. Bed and room occupancy rates are calculated.

/ The data must be submitted by the establishments within about two weeks of the period in question, but delays are frequent.

Statistics are being collected for the first time this year, on a trial basis.
