SUMMARY
FEEDING METHODS AND BEHAVIOUR DURING THE MEAL IN THE GROWING FINISHING PIG
Restricted
feeding
twice aday
of a dietcontaining
cereals eithergranulated
or moistenedcereal meal or soaked meal
(cold
or4 hours
at40 0 C)
wasperformed during
a trialrepeated
twotimes
including
each time4 8 growing-finishing pigs.
The dilution level was : 2.25 1 ofwater/kg
feed. We observed that
pelleted
cereals and moistened meal gave the sameperformances
whereasthe results obtained with soaked meal were
slightly
lower whatever thetemperature
may be. Atslaughtering
the females were leaner as the castrated males but there was no differencefollowing
the treatments.
During
thefinishing period
we observed the behaviour of thepigs
wheneating.
These observations were realized
by
means of television andmagnetoscope allowing
accuratedetermination of the food
consumption
time. Thepigs
fed thepelleted
food took alonger
timeto eat than those
receiving
the three other meals but for the latter there was nosignificant
difference.
Generally
theconsumption
rate increases with age. Thus at 53kg live weight
ikg pelleted
food is consumed in zi minutescompared
with 14 minutes for thepaste.
At 75kg
thetime of
consumption
is reduced to 15 and 8 minutes. As far as thepelleted
food isconcerned,
we did not observe any correlation between theconsumption
rate and thegrowth
rate whereas the correlation coefficient ishighly significant
for thepaste
- 0.502.Consequently,
itmay be
assumed that when
feeding
restricted moisteneddiets,
the animalshaving
ahigh consumption
rate eat one
part
of the rations of their congeners and therefore grow morequickly.

DEVELOPMENT AND HISTOLOGICAL STRUCTURE OF MUSCLE SEMI-MEMBRANOSUS IN PIGS
The structure of the muscle semi-membranosus from
pigs
ofLarge
White and Pietrain breeds has beeninvestigated by studying
thin cuts( 15

of the whole muscle considered at its maximum cross-section. It appearsthat, though
the relative amount of the muscle ishigher
andthough
the cross-section isbigger
inPietrain,
it does not existmajor
differences neither in the number of themyoskh6nes,
nor in the number ofprimary
muscular bundles. Thebigger
