Abstract

The Solanaceae family includes major agricultural cropscultivated worldwide such astomato, potato,

pepper and eggplant. Production of these crops in tropical and subtropical areas is limited by Ralstonia

solanacearum, the causal agent of the bacterial wilt disease. This pathogen represents a threat for crops

due to itslargehost range, itspersistence in fields andits extensive genetic diversity. The species complex

ofR. solanacearum isdivided into fourphylotypes, which ailare able to wilt eggplant.

Seeking forefficient and stable resistance to bacterial wilt,an intraspecific population of 178eggplant

recombinant inbred lines (RlLs) was evaluated for resistance to R. solanacearum strains belonging to

phylotypes I, rrA, IIB, and III.lnaddition of 162 AFLP and SSR markers, genotyping-by-sequencing

(GBS) ofthe RILs provided 661 SNPs usedtoconstruct adense genetic map anchored tothe physical map

oftomato. Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) analysis showed the presence ofa major QTL (ERs!) specifically

associated with resistance to phylotype 1 strains on the chromosome 9 ofeggplant. Two broad-spectrum

QTLs were also identified onchromosome 2 and chromosome 5. Although less efficient than ERsl, these

QTLs were found to partially control strains belonging tophylotype I,rrAand III.

Molecular markers linked to QTLs will be very useful for breeding resistance to Ralstonia

solanacearum ineggplant. The anchored map willalsohelp toidentify candidate genes underlying the so

far identified resistance factors.
