ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I would like to thank Dr. Helene Amory, for giving me the great opportunity to further my career by enabling my PhD, for working with me and assisting me and especially for her patience. She helped, motivated and gave so much that I appreciate gratefully everything I learned from her, not only equine cardiology.

Furthermore, I would like to thank Dr. Tania Art, Prof. Kathleen Mc Entee and Prof. Gunther van Loon, who accompanied me during the years of work on this thesis and whose advice was essential for the finishing of my work.

I would also like to thank Prof. Frédéric Rollin for letting me work in his department and for giving me the time that was necessary to work on my thesis.

I also would like to thank Prof. Johanne Detilleux, from the Department of Quantitative Genetics, who performed the statistical analyses of this work.

I would like to express my gratitude to Prof. Beckers, of the Department of Reproduction Physiology, who accepted me working in his laboratory, and Benoit Remy for his patience trying to purify equine cardiac Troponine I, with me.

Thank you to Prof. Luc Pierard and Dr. Patrizio Lancellotti from the Cardiology Unit for letting me have my first insights into dobutamine stress echocardiography in man.

This work would have been impossible without the financial and technical support of the following organisations and firms: Fonds Spéciaux de la Recherche of the University of Liege, Foundation Prince Laurent, Scil Animal Health, France. Furthermore, I would like to acknowledge the cooperation with Dr. Annick Gabriel of the Department of Anatomy, and Dr. Tania Art of the Department of Physiology, for allowing me to perform the echocardiography on the ponies and horses of their departments.

I would also like to thank all my colleagues from the bovine and the equine clinic, who helped in their own way to complete this work; especially Catherine Delguste, Gaby van Galen, Jerome Ponthier and Alexandra Salciccia who supported me by doing overtime in the clinic to give me the necessary time to work on the PhD; and Marie Debrue, Brieuc de Moffarts, Florin Gaciu, Diego Lopez, and Roger Malice for giving a hand during the experiments.

Last but not least, I would like to thank my parents who made everything possible, so that I am where I am now, for their endless support. I also like to thank my sister Christina for all her help, not only for translations and corrections and finally to Hughes, who always pushed and motivated me.
