GEM Draw Plus™

Version 2.0

Release Note #1

Installing GEM Draw Plus

When you use INSTALL.APP to install GEM Draw Plus, the program does not erase any files on your hard disk or floppy disk. However, INSTALLAPP does copy files named DRAW.APP and DRAW.RSC into a folder named GEMAPPS. If you have a GEMAPPS folder containing files with these names (which will be the case if you currently have a version of GEM Draw™ in- stalled), INSTALL.APP replaces the existing files.

If your disk does not contain a folder named GEMAPPS, INST ALL.APP creates one for you.

Installing on a Hard .Disk

If you want to install GEM Draw Plus on a hard disk with a disk drive iden- tifier other than C:, do the following:

1. In the top window on GEM DesktopTM, open the hard disk icon where you want to install GEM Draw Plus.

2. Insert the disk containing INSTALL.APP in disk drive A: and double-click on the drive A: icon in the bottom window.

3. Double-click on the INSTALL.APP icon in the bottom window. GEM Draw Plus is Installed on the hard disk you have open In the top window.

Starting GEM Draw Plus from the Operating System Prompt

You can start GEM Draw Plus from the operating system prompt by entering a command in the following format:

GEM DRAW [filename.GEM] [,fiIename.GEM] [/D]

The GEM DRAW portion of the command is always required. The two filenames and the /0 parameter are optional. Following are examples of using the command format:

GEM DRAW

This command starts GEM Draw Plus with a new, empty drawing window.

When you quit GEM Draw Plus, you return to the operating system prompt.

However, if you start GEM Output from GEM Draw Plus and then use the Quit command to leave GEM Output, you return to GEM Desktop.

GEM DRAW CHART.GEM

This command starts GEM Draw Plus with a picture named CHART.GEM in the drawing window. Note that the filename (CHART. GEM) contains the GEM-type extension. The extension is required when entering a filename.

GEMDRAW/D

This command starts GEM Draw Plus with a new, empty drawing window.

The /D parameter causes you to return to GEM Desktop after quitting GEM Draw Plus or GEM Output.

GEM DRAW TRUCK.GEM,COVER.GEM

This command starts GEM Draw Plus and opens two separate drawing win- dows. The picture TRUCK.GEM appears in the first window and COVER.GEM in the second.

Note: Although you can start GEM Draw Plus from your operating system prompt, GEM Desktop must still be installed on your computer.

Starting GEM Draw Plus with Two Floppy Disk Drives

If your computer has two floppy disk drives and no hard disk, place your copy of the GEM Draw Plus Application Disk in disk drive A and your GEM Draw Plus Pictures Disk in drive B. Open the icon for disk drive A and then open the GEMAPPS folder on that disk. Double-click on the DRAW.APP Icon to start GEM Draw Plus.

Windows and Picture Sizes

There Is no direct correlation between the file size shown when you do a OIR command (operating system level) and the actual size of a GEM-type file when it is placed in RAM. This is because GEM-type files are normally ex- panded or condensed when read into RAM.

GEM Draw Plus allows you to have two separate drawing windows open on your screen at the same time. The size of the first window is between 27K and 64K RAM. The size of the second window is between 6.5K and 64K RAM. The amount of memory allocated for the windows is determined by the amount of RAM available in your computer and the number and types of device drivers required for your particular computer configuration.

If you open a picture into a drawing window but the picture is too big for that window, GEM Draw Plus notifies you that it will load only part of the picture into the current drawing window. If you subsequently save the picture, GEM Draw Plus saves only the part that Is currently displayed In the drawing win- dow. Proceed cautiously in this situation because saving the partial picture overwrites the origi nal version. (If necessary, you can get back to the original version using the backup file, BAK-type, described in Appendix B of your GEM Draw Plus guide.)

If you open a picture Into your second drawing window but the picture is too big for that window, you might be able to fit the picture into the first windOw.
