CORRIGENDUM TO: IRREDUCIBILITY OF AUTOMORPHIC GALOIS REPRESENTATIONS OF

GL(n) , n AT MOST 5

Abstract. — We explain a serious error in our original paper, which means that the main claimed theorems remain unproved.

Résumé. — Nous expliquons une erreur qui invalide la preuve des principaux théorémes de l’article.

There is an error in (the statement of) Theorem 4.7, namely, it does not apply to the group H = GO(V ) ⊂ GL(V ) when dim(V ) = 5. This invalidates the proof of Theorem 4.1 both for n = 5 and n = 4. For n = 4, our methods seem inadequate to distinguish between the possibility that the Lie algebra of the image is sl

, because these groups have 4-dimensional representations with the same formal character. The most general results that we know of in the case n = 4 are those of [2].

The results of the first three sections remain valid, as do Lemma 4.3 and Corollary 4.4, and the results of Section 5. (The statement of Propo- sition 4.5 is missing the symmetric square of the standard representation of sl

We would like to thank Susan Xia for bringing this mistake to our at- tention.

Finally, the last section gives an overview of the results in [3] and [4] (see also [2]), where tame Galois realizations of the groups in the family GSp 4 ( F ` ) are obtained for

We prove a new Hilbertianity criterion for fields in towers whose steps are Galois with Galois group either abelian or a product of finite simple groups.. We then apply this

It is known how to build Galois representations from many objects: abelian varieties, modular forms, automorphic representations of reductive groups.. For some of these we have

Representations in Mod R,1 GL(n, F q ) are called unipotent... Its isomorphism class does not depend on ψ.. Proof of the lemma This is known in the banal case, hence we suppose that

Let me just say right away that Theorem 1.4 completely breaks down in that case: there are many more supercuspidal representations of Gal( Q p /F ) over E than 2-dimensional

We also note that for algebraic regular representations on can prove not only the rationality over E of the local components of π - this is equivalent, at unramified primes, to

Before attempting to prove the results, it is comforting to perform a few easy checks so as to ensure that these results seem correct beyond reasonable doubt (cf the end of section 1

One needs K to be totally real, as over general number fields there seems to be no hope of proving lifting theorems, or even of attaching l-adic representations
