Preface
TheworkshoponSoftwareArchitecturesforAdaptiveAutonomousSystems(SAAAS2016)isheld in conjunction with the9thIndian Software Engineering Conference(ISEC), Goa, India, on18th February. Theobjectiveoftheworkshopistobringtogetherresearchersandpractitionerstodiscuss andexplorethearchitecturalelementswhichcanexhibitsuchintelligentbehavioras isessentialto manageandoperatelargeandcomplexsystems.
ItiswidelyacknowledgedthatweareheadingtotheIoTera, anerawherewewillseea prolif- erationofdevicesthatareintendedtoaidhumanactivitythroughautomaticsensingandactuation capabilities. Correspondingly, their management and operations will increase in complexity, so much so that itwill be impossible to managethem with currentmethodologies. Oneof theways todealwiththissituationistocreateautonomoussystemsthatareself-configuring,self-managing, self-healing,etc. Todothis, onehastowrite intelligentsoftwarethatleverages thelearnings from AIandcognitivetechnologiesresearch.
Interestingly,theever-increasingscaleandcomplexityhasbeenthereasonbehindexplorationof suitableparadigmssincethe90’s. Inthebeginningofthenewmillenium, theneedformanagement and operation of largesoftware systems led to efforts for scalablearchitectures suchas MAPE-K (IBM), Adaptive Enterprises (Hewlett-Packard)andDynamic Systems (Microsoft),in addition to researchandprototypesin academia. However, theadventofIoTandthepromiseofintegrationof softwareand ”things”is disruptivein its scaleand complexityand calls fora re-evaluation ofthe existingarchitecturalsolutions.
Whilethe problem space seemsto be daunting, there have been a number of positives in the solutionspaceaswell. Therehasbeen ahuge jumpin availablecomputingpowerdueto theever- increasing raw processing power in the silicon and cloud computing, high-speed, high bandwidth communication resources within(PCI-E) and without (Gigabit, 5G). In the methodologies front, therehasbeenatremendousspurtinbigdataanalyticsandgreatstridesinformalmethodsengines and planning/schedulingtechniques. Thechallenge istoutilizethese resourcesand methodologies ineithertheexistingornovelarchitecturestoprovidelargeindustrialscalesolutionssuchassmart cities (water, power, waste management), smart electric grids, intelligent transport systems etc.
Theobjectiveoftheworkshopistoexposetheaudiencetothesechallengesandthestate-of-the-art in researchand implementationin thefield.
Topics under scope: All aspects of autonomous and adaptive software including but not limited to the following areas - Multi-agent systems, Self-adaptive software, Planning techniques, Analytics, Specifications,Architecture and Design, Monitoringand Control,Testing andVerifica- tion,FormalMethods.
