The British Isles were subjected to bombing attack by German aircraft from May 1940 to March 1945.

The attacks were geographically diverse, though the majority was confined to London and those areas of southern England most easily reached from Germany 's French air bases, or within the range of V-Weapons.

When? Why? (The German bombing of Britain served different purposes at different times) Where?

The blitz

From May-June 1940 to May 1941

- To blockade Britain: To cut Britain off from essential overseas supplies and to force a food crisis.

- To undermine the British war production effort (industrial targets: the aircraft and aero-engine factories + shipbuilding, mining)

- To demoralize people (soldiers and civilians) and put pressure on British government to seek an Armistice.

Intermitent raids From 1941 to 1943

In 1942, in retaliation for the bombing of the ancient German port cities of Rostock and Lübeck, the German Air Force was ordered to mount spoiling attacks against British cultural sites. "Baedeker raids", The name derives from Baedeker, a series of German tourist guidebooks, including detailed maps, which were used to generate targets for bombing.

After that the German Air Force had too many tasks to perform at the fighting fronts to be able to do anything against Britain.

There were attacks against Exeter, York, Bath , Norwich and Canterbury ……

The Baby Blitz (operation Steinbock) From November 1943 to May 1944

The baby blitz was the last strategic bombing air offensive by the Luftwaffe ( using conventional aircraft) . The British called it the ‘Baby Blitz' because it was relatively ineffective.

(V2) From June 1944 to March 1945.

Hitler ordered the use of missiles to attack allied cities as retaliatory raids for allied bombings against German cities ( to appease German public opinion).

The V1 and V2 were called vengeance weapons or V-Weapons) by Germans. Buzz Bomb or dooddle bug by allied force.

The V1 was a flying bomb (cruise missile), V1 were launched From Dutch or French coast (250 km = 160 miles)

The V2 was the first long-range guided ballistic missile (320 km soit 200 miles)

The weapons were inaccurate and carried a small payload and did little damage to Britain's war effort.
