Recognizing the CFPC’s 2013 award recipients

MDCM CCFP FCFP CAE, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Dear Colleagues,I shared with you some of the initiatives of CFPC’s Honours and Awards Program and the Research and Education Foundation in the December issue of Canadian Family Physician.1 I want now to invite you to review the list of award and scholarship recipients for 2013. Please make a point, if you know any of them, to connect with them, when appropriate, to congratulate them. Many recipients remind us of the importance of peer recognition.
I also want to remind you of the deadlines for applica- tions for 2014: grant applications are due March 3; nomi- nations for awards of recognition are due April 1; and resident and student nominations are due June 20. Further information about applications can be found at www.

W. Victor Johnston Award

This award is named in honour of the late Dr W. Victor Johnston, the CFPC’s frst Executive Director, from 1954 to 1964. It recognizes outstanding national or international family medicine leaders for their continuous and enduring contributions to our specialty, with the recipient presenting the W. Victor Johnston Oration at Convocation.
Calvin Gutkin Family Medicine Ambassador Award

This award, named in honour of Dr Calvin Gutkin, CFPC Executive Director and Chief Executive Offcer from 1996 to 2012, recognizes a dynamic leader in Canadian family medicine distinguished for his or her vision, innovation, and relationship building with organizations that support and positively infuence the ever changing role of the fam- ily physician.
CFPC-Scotiabank Family Medicine Lectureship

Jean-Pierre Despins Award

This award, named in honour of the late Dr Jean-Pierre Despins, CFPC President from 1995 to 1996 and Chair of the Board of the REF from 1999 to 2000, honours a CFPC fam- ily physician member identifed as an outstanding advocate and public spokesperson for family medicine, family phy- sicians, and patients. This award is supported by member donations to the J-P Despins Fund of the REF.

Awarded in honour of the late Dr Hollister King, CFPC President from 1977 to 1978 and former Chief of Family Practice at Women’s College Hospital in Toronto, Ont, this grant provides an opportunity for a practising family physi- cian to attain or enhance special skills in delivery of rural medical care. This award is supported by member dona- tions to the REF Hollister King Fund.
Daniel Glazier Grants in Adolescent Mental Health and Substance Abuse

These grants are named in memory of Daniel Glazier, a young man from Toronto who died at 18 years of age in July 2009 of circumstances related to mental health and substance abuse. They are designed for family physicians, family physician researchers, and educators who propose research, clinical programs or tools, or professional devel- opment to assist family physicians in assessing and treating such young patients. These grants are supported by the REF of the CFPC and by the friends and family of the Glaziers.

CFPC Environmental Health Award

The recipient will also be awarded the Nicole Bruinsma Award for Environmental Leadership presented by the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment and the Cheer Foundation in memory of Dr Nicole Bruinsma. This award is supported by the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment and the CFPC REF.

FELLOWSHIP
Fellowship in the College of Family Physicians of Canada (FCFP) is an honour the CFPC confers upon Certificant members in good standing who have main- tained their Certification for a minimum of 10 consec- utive years, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to continuing professional development and lifelong learn- ing. LIFE MEMBERS
Life membership is awarded to those 70 years of age or older who have been CFPC members in good standing for at least 10 consecutive years immediately before the date of nomination. The names of Life Members for 2013 can be found at www.cfpc.ca/awards.
