Multilinear algebra

Exercise 1 (Tensor products over R). Let E and F be two R-vector spaces of dimension n andm, respectively. We denote bye= (ej) a basis ofE and byf = (fi) a basis ofF.

1. Letα∈(E)⊗k, identify the coordinates ofα in the basis of(E)⊗k associated with e.

2. Give a natural isomorphism betweenE⊗F and L(E, F).

3. LetL :E → F be a linear map whose matrix is M = (mij) in the bases e and f. We defineL :α7→α◦LfromF to E. Give the matrix ofL in the dual basese andf. Exercise 2 (Exterior product and determinant). Let E be an n-dimensional vector space.

We denote by(ei)a basis of E and by(ei) its dual basis. Letk∈ {1, . . . , n} an integer.

1. Letα andβ be multilinear forms, check thatAlt(α⊗β) = Alt(Alt(α)⊗Alt(β)).

2. Let α1, . . . , αk ∈ E, show that α1∧ · · · ∧αk

(v1, . . . , vk) = det (αi(vj))16i,j6k

, for any v1, . . . , vk∈E.

3. For anyI ⊂ {1, . . . , n}, we denote byCard(I)its cardinal and by|I|=P

i∈Iiits length.

Using the associativity and anticommutativity of∧and the previous question, prove the following “Laplace expansion”: for any matrix M of dimension n,

det(M) = X

I,J⊂{1,...,n}

Card(I)=k=Card(J)

(−1)|I|+|J|det(MI,J) det(MIC,JC),

whereIC (resp.JC) is the complementary set ofI (resp.J) andMI,J is the submatrix of M formed by the coefficients which indices lie inI ×J. What happens whenk= 1?

Exercise 3 (Pullback). LetE andF be two vector spaces andL:E→F be a linear map.

1. For any alternating formsα and β, show that L(α∧β) =L(α)∧L(β).

2. Let(ej)and (fi) be bases ofE andF respectively. We denote byM = (mij)the matrix ofLin these bases. LetJ ={j1, . . . , jk} ⊂ {1. . . , n}be such that16j1 <· · ·< jk6n, we denote eJ =ej1 ∧ · · · ∧ejk and use similar notations for F. Let ω =P

ωIfI, where we sum over subsets I ⊂ {1, . . . , n}of cardinal k. Express L(ω) in the basis(eJ).

Exercise 4 (Exterior algebra). 1. Is there an alternating multilinear form α on a vector space E such thatα∧α6= 0?

2. Is there a non-zero alternating form commuting with any other?

Exercise 5 (Decomposable forms). LetE be a vector space of dimension n. An alternating k-linear form onE is said to be decomposable if it can be written as the alternating product ofk linear forms. If not, it is saidindecomposable.

1. Show that linear forms and alternating n-linear forms are always decomposable.

2. Letα ∈ E\ {0}, show that an alternating k-linear form ω 6= 0 is divisible by α (that is, can be written as α∧β) if and only ifα∧ω= 0.

1

(2)

3. Let(α, β, γ, δ) be linearly independent inE. Is the 2-form ω =α∧β+γ∧δ decom- posable?

4. Is an(n−1)-form ω always decomposable (assuming n >1)? Considerφω :α7→α∧ω from E to Vn

E.
