Governing Rural–Urban Relationships and Periurban Areas in France and Australia: Different Land Use Cultures, Same Issues?

The governance of rural–urban relationships has become a very challenging issue in many countries around the world over the two last decades. Many competing interests are embedded in it: agriculture, metropolitan development, biodiversity conservation, water resources use, etc. Many conflicts take place in periurban areas, for instance. These conflicts are signs of a more general evolution of rural – urban relationships in a context of global change – eg. global warming, loss of biodiversity, the global food challenge, the petrol crisis. This seminar aims to compare how these challenges are tackled in France and in Australia. Considering the

differences between the political and institutional contexts of various countries, it will be a great opportunity to think about the role of land use culture in different governance systems.

This seminar is organised in partnership with AgroParisTech Clermont-Ferrand, INRA-SAD and UMR METAFORT.
