The Center for History at Sciences Po recruits one postdoctoral researcher in environmental history

The Center for History at Sciences Po, in Paris, France, recruits one postdoctoral researcher in environmental history for a 36-month period starting in September 2019. This position is opened as part of the project “Shifting Shores: An Environmental History fo Morphological Change in Mediterranean River Deltas over the Twentieth Century," led by prof. Giacomo Parrinello and funded by an Émergence(s) grant from the City of Paris. The project involves a collaboration with the Riverlab at UC Berkeley led by prof. Matt Kondolf.

This project studies the connected history of river basin development and deltas morphological alteration in the Po, Rhone and Ebro River Deltas. It aims at uncovering the factors that drove changes in sediment connectivity, identifying who understood these changes and in which terms, and analyzing the policies and politics embedded in these changes. The project will contribute to integrating a geomorphological perspective to environmental history scholarship and develop a deeper understanding of the connectivity of rivers and coasts that integrates human actions and motives.

This researcher will collaborate on the development and coordination of the project and conduct archival and library research within the framework of the project’s objectives. This includes

implementing an annotated database of bibliographic and archival references and a historical GIS database; contributing to the scientific and administrative organization of two international

workshops; contributing to the deliverables of the project, including at least two co-authored international peer-reviewed article and one co-editorship together with the PI. There are no teaching duties associated to the position.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in hand by the beginning of the position in history, historical geography, or closely related discipline. A specialization in environmental history is welcomed but not indispensable. She or he will have published or forthcoming papers in peer- reviewed international journals and experience of archival and library research. Full command of academic English is indispensable, as well as reading skills in French, Catalan, and/or Castilian.

Familiarity with Zotero and GIS software will be a plus. He/she will be expected to work full time on the project and participate in the academic life of Sciences Po.
