In October 2015, North Korean authorities issued a directive banning medical professionals from performing birth control procedures and abortions to reverse the country’s falling birth rate7.

BACKGROUND

The Democratic People’s Republic (DPR) of Korea constitutes the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. In 2018, it reportedly had a population of 25.55 million1, out of which 51.1% are females.

In recent years, MMR in DPR Korea has increased mildly while the CPR has increased from 70.6%

in 2010 to 78% in 2014. Notably, TFR has been decreasing at a steady rate and was 1.9 in 2017.

According to the SDHS 2014, 11% of all currently married women ever had an abortion3.

There are no documents after 2015 on the abortion laws and policies and the indicators related to it.
