in previousvolumes
of thisMemoir,
full references aregiven to the labours ofothers
who
have
worked
at the formations described in the following chapters.In
early days thebroad
outlines of the
geology
of theMiddle and
Upper
Ooliteswere
admirably sketched

Webster,Sedgwick, Buckland,

laBeche, Lonsdale, Fitton, Mantell,and

The
Middle
and Upper
Oolitic Rocks.The
Middle and
Upper
Oolitic formationscome
to the surfaceat intervals across the country
from
Dorsetshire to Lincolnshire;but
the outcrop,more
especially of the highermembers
of the series, is concealed over considerable tractsby
the Cretaceous strata. Tiiere is evidence that prior to the deposition of thesenewer
formations,the Oolitic stratawere
tilted,and
insome
casesrucked
up
and
faulted, sothat the Cretaceous deposits in theirextension
westwards
were
laiddown
on

Oxfordian
Beds
are, for themost
part, distinctlymarked
oflffrom
the underlying Cornbrash, but they are connected palaeontologically, so that there isno
evidence of
any
break in the series, aswe
passupwards from
theliower
Oolites.The
mass
of theMiddle and
Upper
Oolites consists ofmarine
deposits; ofthick clays that are separated
by
stone-beds, which, inthe case ofthe OorallianBeds
especially, are of a variableand
inconstant character.
The
Purbeck Beds
show
theincoming
of terrestrial, freshwater,and
estuarine conditions, that are attendedby some
evidences of localunconformity
with the Portland Beds,but
by
no
marked
discordance thatwould
suggestany
greatbreak
in the series.These
freshwater conditionswere
continued in theWealden
strata, which,in the south of
England,
blend intimately with the «arlierPurbeck
deposits, so thatwe
have
a passage from Jurassicto
Neocomian
orLower
Cretaceousformations.In
parts of Lincolnshire,and
again in Yorkshire,we
have
evidence of
marine
bedson
the border-linesbetween
the Jurassicand
Cretaceous strata,and
it is consequently a debatable matteras to

closely correlation canbe
carriedbetween
the forma-tionsofthe northand
south ofEngland.
In
the districtunder
consideration it
seems
probable that the SpilsbySandstone
ofLincolnshire,
may
be classed in point of agewith
thePurbeck
Beds.The
general relationshipbetween
thePurbeck
and
Wealden
strata has led
many
geologists togroup
them
together.Nor
does thelocal evidencejustifyour parting them.Itis only
on
widergrounds
thatthe divisionbetween
Jurassicand
Cretaceousis taken at this horizon.No
generalsystem
of classification willbefound
equally applicable to all areas.With
the Trias
and
Lias, with the Liasand
Oolites,we
find insome
regionssuch a gradualpassage, that

definite planeofdemarcation -canbe

Oxford Clay

Rock,

General Account
of
the
Strata.
The
Oxford
Clay
takes itsname
from
the county of Oxford,where
it enters extensively into the structure of theground^
moreover,it is
exposed
in tlieneighbourhood
of the City ofOxford
in several brickyards
which
appropriately furnishsome
of thelargest inland sections ofthe formation.
The
term
"Clunch Clay and
Shale"was
usedby William Smith
(1815-16),
because the upper partof the formation compriseshard clay rising in lumps,called "
Clunch
" ; while deeperdown
it
becomes
blackerand
laminated,under which
circumstances itis called " Shale."*
The
term Oxford,Forest, orFen
Clay
was
used
by
Buckland
in1818;
and
thiscompound
name
was
suggested
from
the occurrence ofwooded
tracts, such as the oldForest of
Braydon,
and
from
thedevelopment
of theClay
beneath portions ofthe Fenland.|
The
general term ofOxfordiaa
was
usedby D'Orbigny
in 1844.The
Oxford
Clay
consists of bluish or greenishand
lead-coloured clay,
which
usuallybecomes
brown
or yellowish-grey atthe surface.
In
many
places,and more
especiallyin theupper
part,the
bedding
in the clayis not distinct,and
ismarked
onlyby
bands
ofseptariaand
occasional layers of earthy limestone;but
lower
down
the formation is usuallymore
and
more
shaly,and
this characteris
maintained
even
when
the bedscome
near thesurface.
The
shale is greyand
reddish-brown or purple incolour.
Both
clayand
shale are often calcareous,and
occasionallybituminous;
and
agood
deal oflignite issometimes
met
with.Septaria occur at irregular intervals
and
theymay
attaina
largesize,
having
a diameter of 3 feet ormore.Small
irregular reddish-»coloured ironstone-nodules are found in places in theupper
beds; these also are septarian.The
beds containmuch,
iron-pyrites
and
selenite;and
many
of the fossils areof apyriticcharacter.
Towards
the base of theOxford Clay
thereoccur inconstantbeds
of sandand
calcareoussandstone, the latter often appearing*Parkinsondescribed "Clunch" as a soft chalk-like stone, found towards the
topofthe clay(Organic Remains,vol.lii.p.446). Clunch hasalsobeendescribed asaprovincial termfor "induratedclay, whenglossy,unctuous, andtending to a slaty texture;"while when dulland smooth it is termed "Clod." W. Phillips,

colour; their beauty,when
