The Semantic Web: Challenges and Applications

Richard Benjamins

Intelligent Software Components (iSOCO) in Madrid, Spain [email protected]

Abstract

The Semantic Web has received a significant amount of research funding in the past few years. Now it is time to bring early results of those efforts to the market. In this talk, we will discuss the challenges the we are facing in this effort and we will show what technologies are mature enough to face the market.

Special attention will be given to ontologies in real-life settings. We will demonstrate several applications for Semantic Web technology.

Curriculum Vitae

Dr Richard Benjamins is Director of Innovation and R&D at Intelligent Software Components (iSOCO) in Madrid, Spain. He co-founded the international Semantic Web so- lutions company in June 1999. In September 2005 they were granted the National Award for Computer Science.

Dr Benjamins has been a part time professor at the Tech- nical University of Madrid. Before working at iSOCO, Dr Benjamins has held positions at the University of Amster- dam, the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, the University of Paris-South, France, and the Spanish Artificial Intelligence Research Institute in Barcelona.

He has published over 100 scientific articles in books, journals and proceedings, covering areas such as knowl- edge technologies, artificial intelligence, human-computer studies, knowledge management, Semantic Web and on- tologies. He has been the guest editor of several jour- nal special-issues and co-chair of numerous international workshops and conferences. He now serves on many inter- national programme committees.

He is a member of the editorial board of IEEE Intelligent Systems, Web Semantics (Elsevier), International Journal on Semantic Web and Information Systems (Idea Group).

Richard Benjamins received his Master’s Degree (1988) and Ph.D. (1993) in cognitive science from the University of Amsterdam.
