Summary:
Two gynandromorphic specimens of Phlebotomus perniciosus Newstead, 1911 are described and illustrated for the first time The specimens were collected in the Northeast of the Iberian Peninsula (Spain).
D uring an epidemiological survey of zoonotic leishmaniosis carried out in the NE of the Iberian Peninsula, t w o g y n a n d r o m o r p h i c
s p e c i m e n s b e l o n g i n g to Phlebotomus perniciosus Newstead were collected. According to the literature,
this character has b e e n observed in Lutzomyia longi- palpis ( L u t z et N e i v a ) , L. rorotaensis F l o c h et Abbonenc, Phlebotomus ariasi Tonnoir, P. orientalis Parrot, Sergentomyia bedfordi (Newstead), S. minuta (Rondani) and S. minuta parroti (Adler et Theodor) (revisions summarized by Martinez Ortega et al., 1989 and Gállego et al., 1991). This is the first report of gynandromorphism in P. perniciosus.
S andflies were collected in July 1991 in Torroja del Priorat ( 4 l ° 1 5 ' N 1°00' E) using castor-oil soaked papers. T h e specimens w e r e fixed in 90° alcohol a n d mounted in Hoyer's medium pre- vious clearing in lactic acid.

constituted. Penian valves well constituted but sho- wing a slight reduction in their length. Left lateral lobe or surstyle normally developed and the right o n e showing a marked degree o f atrophy, about 3 0 % . Cerci well-shaped. T h e absence of three spines in the right style and two in the left o n e is due, undoub- tedly, to a mechanical cause during the collection and/or mounting o f the specimen.
Female genitalia is reduced to the presence o f the insula and the lobes o f the 8th sternite, whose spatu- late a p o p h y s e s a p p e a r s h o r t e n e d , d i s t o r t e d a n d without their apical spines.
It should b e noticed that the abdominal end has rota- ted 180°, which is exceptional in other gynandromor- p h i c s p e c i m e n s , s h o w i n g t h e g e n i t a l c l a s p e r s a normal position, while the lobes o f the 8th sternite have occupied an anomalous position.
T h e mouth parts are typically male-like, as is the antennal formula.
Specimen n° 2 : female-like gynandromorph (Fig. 2) The elements of the female genitalia (lobes of the 8th sternite and their spatulate rods and spines, insula, furca, spermathecae with their conducts and basal diverticles) are well-shaped and normally developed.
Cerci also normal.
Male genitalia reduced to the presence of a rudimen- tary left lateral lobe, showing 9 0 % reduction and with only a left genital gonapophysis with a very rudimen- tary c o x i t e , c u r v e d a n d s h o r t e r t h a n t h e c e r c i ("median lamina" in some authors) and with the style represented b y a spiniform formation implanted in the top of the coxite.
The absence of the head did not allow observation of secondary sexual characters.

DISCUSSION
T he study o f these P. perniciosus gynandro- m o r p h i c s p e c i m e n s s e e m s to confirm pre- v i o u s o b s e r v a t i o n s o f t h e relatively high frequences of the very partial and rudimentary deve- lopment presented by the structures pertaining to the non dominant s e x , frequently only noticeable after very careful examination.
Teratologies more or less pronounced or anomalies, p r a c t i c a l l y c o n s t a n t in t h e g o n a p o p h y s i s o f t h e gynandromorphs, are o n c e more present in the speci- mens studied here, although in the male-like speci- men they are reduced to a shortening o f o n e o f the lateral lobes and to the distorsion o f the spine-less spatulate rods o f the 8th external lobes o f the female genitalia.
