Description

PRODUCT NAME: PATHWORKS for DOS (InfoServer), Version 1.0 SPD 35.08.00

DESCRIPTION

PATHWORKS for DOS (InfoServer) is based on the Per- sonal Computing Systems Architecture (PCSA) which Is an extension of Digital Equipment Corporation's sys- tems and networking architecture that merges the VMS, ULTRIX, ~OS, OS/2®, and Macintosh@) environments.

PCSA provides a framework for integrating personal computers Into an organization's total Information sys- tem so different types of users can share information, large system resources and network services across the entire organization.

PC SA is implemented in the PATHWORKS product set.

The PATHWORKS family of software products includes:

• PATHWORKS for DOS (InfoServer) - Software that allows the DOS personal computer (described in this document) to access applications written for industry- standard (ISO 9660, High Sierra) formatted CDs from the Digital InfoServer 100's CD disk drives.

The PATHWORKS for DOS software product (de- scribed in SPO 55.07.xx) and InfoServer 100 hard- ware product (described in SPO 33.20.xx) are pre- requisite products.

• PATHWORKS for DOS - Software that allows the DOS personal computer (described in SPO 55.07.xx) to use the facilities provided by PATHWORKS for VMS (described in SPO 30.50.xx), PATHWORKS for ULTRIX (described in SPO 32.44.xx), or PATH- WORKS for OS/2 server software (described in SPO 55.24.xx) using OECnet as the network transport.

Refer to the PATHWORKS for DOS Software Product Description (SPO SS.07.xx) for a complete description of other services available to the DOS client in a networked environment. Refer to the PATHWORKS for DOS Sys- tem Support Addendum (SSA 55.07.xx-x) for detailed configuration information.

Features

PATHWORKS for DOS (InfoServer) is a layered soft- ware product that is Installed on PATHWORKS for

~OS, Version 4.0 clients. Using this product, DOS clients can access the COROM drives attached to the InfoServer 100 which contain applications written using

PC Industry-standard formats such as ISO 9660 and High Sierra.

PATHWORKS for DOS clients (without the InfoServer software option) can also access virtual disk services offered from the hard drives of the InfoServer 100.

Access to the InfoServer 100's COROM drives is trans- parent to the DOS clients. Clients see the information they require on fully shareable drives as If they were locally attached devices.

PATHWORKS for DOS clients can access up to seven COROMs in the following combinations:

• Seven CDR OMs or

• Any combination o( eight COROMs and Local Area Disk (LAD) drives

The InfoServer 100 eliminates the need to configure one COROM reader per client; any drive attached to the In- foServer 1 00 can be accessed by any supported client on the LAN.

InfoServer 100

The InfoServer 100 Is an Ethernet-based, high- performance virtual disk server capable of making COROMs available to clients on the network. Refer to the InfoServer 100 Software Product Description (SPO 33.20.xx) for further information.

The InfoServer 1 00 hooks directly to either ThlckWlre or ThinWire Ethernet to provide RRD40 or RRD42 COROM, RZ56 Winchester hard disk, or Alphatronlx In- spire removable magneto-optlcal read/write disk access to any supported client on the local area network (LAN).

The InfoServer 100 supports up to 100 simultaneous users.

Installation and Configuration Utility

The PATHWORKS for DOS (InfoServer) software pro- vides the user with utility programs to configure DOS clients to connect to the virtual disks offered by the In- foServer 100. On-line Help facilities are also provided.
