Introduction

The Abitibi and Pontiac subprovinces form the southern part of the Superior Province in Québec. The Abitibi Subprovince is the largest, one of the most studied, and among the richest Archean greenstone belts in the world. It comprises numer- ous granitoid intrusions and volcanic and sedimentary belts oriented roughly E-W (Figure 1C-1), dated between 2.75 and 2.67 Ga. The Abitibi belt is transected by several major reverse or normal faults oriented E-W to NW-SE, as well as by sinis- tral NE-trending and dextral SE-trending faults that dissect volcano-sedimentary domains into lozenge-shaped segments cored by intrusive rocks.

The Pontiac Subprovince is separated from the Abitibi Subprovince by the Cadillac-Larder Lake Break, a structure that extends east to west over a distance of more than 100 km in Québec and Ontario. The Pontiac Subprovince comprises granitoid intrusions and orthogneisses in its central part, along with detrital sedimentary rocks and paragneisses with a few volcanic sequences. The latter form ultramafi c, mafi c, and locally felsic assemblages in the southwestern part of the Pontiac. A few thin bands of mafi c to ultramafi c volcanic rocks are also present in the northern part of the subprovince.

The Abitibi Subprovince is world-renowned for the great number and high grade of its precious metal (Au-Ag) and polymetallic (Cu-Zn-Au-Ag and Cu-Au) ore deposits. A few metallic deposits, architectural stone quarries, and industrial mineral deposits (lime, quartz, kyanite, mica, and garnet) were also mined in the Pontiac Subprovince. Exploration and min- ing have made this territory one of the main mining regions in Québec for close to a century.

In 2006, we compiled 160 mineral exploration projects in the Abitibi and Pontiac subprovinces. The number of gold exploration projects stood at 107 (Table 1C-1), whereas the number of exploration projects targeting polymetallic deposits or diamonds reached 53 (Table 1C-2) in 2006. Figures 1C-1 to 1C-4 show the location of all exploration projects in the Abitibi and Pontiac subprovinces.

north of La Sarre, Aurizon Mines Ltd continued shaft sinking, underground development, as well as defi nition and exploration drilling. Probable reserves were estimated in 2005 at 4.908 Mt grading 7.69 g/t Au. Commercial production is slated to begin in early 2007, at an annual rate of 185,000 ounces of gold.

On the Fenelon project (project 67), located 70 km west-northwest of Matagami, American Bonanza Gold Corporation reported high-grade intervals from drillholes testing the Discovery Zone, namely 9.7 g/t Au over 1.9 m in drillhole FA-05-258. About 30 km further west, on the La Martinière property (project 78), drillholes intersected a stockwork system of silicifi cation and quartz-albite-carbonate- pyrite veining with locally high grades, such as 11.0 g/t Au over 0.7 m in drillhole MD-06-07. On the Beschefer property (project 12), located east of the former Selbaie mine, drillhole SBJ-06-01 completed by Sea Green Capital Corporation intersected a quartz-ankerite-pyrite zone grading 4.86 g/t Au over 10 m. Société d’exploration minière Vior Inc. completed a drilling campaign on its Douay property (project 53), located 60 km south of Matagami. Drillholes encountered a new gold-bearing zone near the Central Porphyry Zone; best results include 8.7 g/t Au over 5.5 m in drillhole DO-06-09.

On the Kistabiche property (project P28) of Cancor Mines Inc. and SOQUEM Inc., a drillhole intersected a 9.50-m inter- val grading 0.34% Cu, 14.61% Zn, and 51.50 g/t Ag. A new resource estimate was calculated in December; measured and indicated resources for the fi ve sulphide lenses (A, B, B1, E, E1) total 587,961 tonnes grading 7.63% Zn and 0.35% Cu. A feasi- bility study is currently underway on the deposit. In Matagami, Xstrata Zinc Canada (formerly Falconbridge Ltd) announced the start-up of the Perseverance mining project (project P43), discovered in March 2000. Construction is expected to last two years, for a projected mine life of fi ve years at an annual output of 228,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate. The ore deposit, com- posed of three massive sulphide lenses (Equinox, Perseverance, Perseverance West) contains mineral resources estimated at 5 Mt at an average grade of 16.8% Zn, 1.3% Cu, 34 g/t Ag, and 0.4 g/t Au. In the Cadillac area, Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd announced the start-up of work to bring the LaRonde II mine (project P9) into production, deep below existing infrastructure at the LaRonde mine. An internal shaft will be built near the existing Penna shaft. Production is slated to begin in 2011, and probable reserves on the order of 3.6 million ounces of gold should secure a mine life of 10 years. The ore deposit also contains 13 million ounces of silver, 62,000 tonnes of copper, and 155,000 tonnes of zinc reserves. Further west, near the former Bousquet II mine (project P44), Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd intersected in drillhole gold-bearing polymetallic semi-massive to massive sulphides.

Two holes intersected the zone some 2,500 m below surface and 1,900 m west of the Penna shaft. The polymetallic zone may represent the extension of Zone 20 North at the LaRonde mine.

Drillhole 3215-141 intersected 3.5 m (true thickness) grading 3.9 g/t Au, 251.5 g/t Ag, 0.05% Cu, and 0.22% Zn.

Northwest of Rouyn-Noranda, First Metals Inc. obtained the required approvals to dewater the ramp and open pit on the Fabie project (project P20). The company plans to extract a 50,000-tonne bulk sample. Hole FMI-06-04 drilled on the property intersected 25 m grading 2.9% Cu. Joint venture part- ners Britannica Resources Corporation and Northern Star Mining Corporation reported good results from grab samples collected on the Revillard property (project P26), east of Rouyn- Noranda. Sample Rev 298, taken in an altered zone along the contact between the Kewagama and Blake River groups, yielded assays of 56.1 g/t Au, 13.3 g/t Ag, 2640 ppm Cu, and 1825 ppm Zn. In the spring, partners Alexis Minerals Corporation and Xstrata Copper Canada (formerly Falconbridge Ltd) com- pleted a mineral resource estimate for the West Ansil deposit (project P14), discovered 15 km northwest of Rouyn-Noranda.

Malartic – Senneterre – Val-d’Or Area

(Figures 1C-1, 1C-2, 1C-4)

In the Malartic – Senneterre – Val-d’Or area, the Beaufor, Sigma, Kiena, and East Amphi mines produced gold and silver in 2006.

In Malartic, on the Canadian Malartic property (project 69), Osisko Exploration Ltd continued its defi nition drilling pro- gram. The results were used to defi ne inferred resources of 171 Mt grading 1.2 g/t Au, using a cut-off grade of 0.5 g/t Au, in metasedimentary rocks and granodiorite with disseminated pyrite. Best results include a 162-m section grading 1.66 g/t Au in drillhole CM06-778. Richmont Mines Inc. announced in January 2006 the start-up of commercial production at the East Amphi gold mine (project 71), located 3 km west of Malartic, where measured and indicated resources in the B2, BN, and P zones are estimated at 1.39 Mt at a grade of 5.4 g/t Au. Gold mineralization is largely associated with disseminated pyrite in a felsic porphyry intrusion, sheared basaltic country rocks and cross-cutting mafi c dykes. On the Marban Mine Block (project 83), located northeast of Malartic, NioGold Mining Corporation completed a drilling campaign which resulted in the discovery of a gold-bearing zone, with grades of 7.53 g/t Au over 7.0 m in drillhole MB-06-001. On the Midway project (project 59) 16 km east of Malartic, Northern Star Mining Corporation erected a new headframe and began dewatering at the past-producing Malartic Goldfi elds mine, which straddles the Cadillac Tectonic Zone. A very deep drillhole (MGFD0601) testing below existing infrastructure intersected a number of gold-bearing zones, including a 5.3-m interval grading 9.61 g/t Au.

On the Vassan property (project 16) located 8 km northwest of Val-d’Or, Stellar Pacifi c Ventures Inc. drill-tested the pyrrhotite-pyrite-chalcopyrite-rich Hamelin zone. Indicated resources are estimated at 385,054 tonnes grading 5.01 g/t Au.

At the Kiena mine complex (projects 54 and 56), about 9 km west of Val-d’Or, Wesdome Gold Mines Inc. commenced commercial production on July 24, 2006, and expects to pro- duce 50,000 ounces of gold in 2007. Defi nition and exploration drilling continued in the VC, 388, and Martin zones in 2006, from two exploration drifts. Gold mineralization is generally associated with a quartz-albite-pyrite stockwork hosted in albitized basalts; drillhole 3969 in the 388 Zone intersected 6.8 m (true thickness) grading 8.39 g/t Au.

In the west part of the city of Val-d’Or, Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd advanced construction of surface installations, sinking of the production shaft, and underground development at the Goldex mining project (project 60), where reserves are estimated at 21.77 Mt at a grade of 2.4 g/t Au. Production is expected to begin in 2008, at an annual rate of 170,000 ounces of gold. The Goldex Extension ore deposit consists of a stockwork of quartz-tourmaline-pyrite veins in albite-pyrite-altered wall rocks, hosted in a quartz diorite sill. On the Lamaque property

(project 18), adjacent to the open pit Sigma mine, Century Mining Corporation commenced an underground exploration program at the former Lamaque mine.

On the Aurbel property (project 17), located 10 km east of Val-d’Or, Alexis Minerals Corporation extracted a 15,000- tonne bulk sample which is part of an underground exploration program on the Lac Herbin project, where resources are esti- mated at 1.07 Mt grading 7.26 g/t Au. Seven ore zones consist- ing of gold-bearing quartz-pyrite veins are hosted in shear zones that cross-cut the Bourlamaque Batholith. A decision to go into production should be announced in early 2007. At the Beaufor mine (project 93), located 19 km east of Val-d’Or, Richmont Mines Inc. completed development work as well as defi nition and exploration drilling. Ore zones consist of gold-bearing quartz-pyrite veins cross-cutting the Bourlamaque Batholith.

On the Fiedmont property (project P17), located north of Val-d’Or, Kinbauri Gold Corporation reported good results from a drilling campaign, including a 5-m interval grading 1.48 g/t PGE in drillhole KNB06-03.

Témiscamingue Region

(Figures 1C-1 and 1C-2)

On the Guillet property (project 74), located 5 km east of Belleterre, Vantex Resources Ltd completed a series of drill- holes and extracted a bulk sample of 11,514 tonnes from zone A on the Lake Expanse showing, characterized by gold-bear- ing quartz-sulphide veins. A total of 1,215 ounces of gold was extracted from the sample, for an average recovery grade of 3.28 g/t Au. About 2 km west of Belleterre, on the Lake Chevrier (Belleterre) property (project 14), SearchGold Resources Inc.

intersected high grades locally in drillholes testing Vein #3, namely 18.21 g/t Au over 0.33 m in drillhole CHE-05-15.

On the Midrim project (project P3), Fieldex Exploration and FNX Mining Company Inc. encountered in drillhole MR-06-95 a 10.6-m interval grading 0.91% Cu, 0.62% Ni, 0.08 g/t Au, 0.28 g/t Pt, and 0.80 g/t Pd. Fieldex Exploration and FNX Mining Company Inc. also reported good results on the Témiscamingue property (project P2). Drillhole LF-06-04 intersected 52.50 m grading 0.49% Cu and 1.01% Ni. About 20 km east of Belleterre, Richmond Minerals Inc. obtained signifi cant results on the Halle property (project P46). A series of 57 grab samples yielded grades reaching 0.14% Ni, 0.07% Cu, 282 ppm Co, and 0.22% Cr.

In terms of diamond exploration in the Témiscamingue region, Contact Diamond Corporation discovered a kimber- lite, known as BA-19, northeast of Ville-Marie (project P45), whereas Superior Diamonds Inc. discovered a kimberlitic body near Lac Lussac (project P1). Analytical results confi rm- ing the presence of diamonds in samples from the two projects were still pending at the end of 2006.
