Fine arts,
thought it was time to look at things in a new way. The Guggenheim Foundation is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Frank Lloyd Wright's landmark building on New York's "Museum Mile", pro- viding the perfect opportunity for an historical overview of American Abstract painting... and for dis- covering some budding abstract artists! The Foundation "Learning through Art" prograrnme, which sends "teaching artists" into prirnary-school classes in NYC, allowed us to interview schoolchildren - many from the Bronx and Harlem - proudly flaunting their artwork at a special exhibit at... the Guggenheim Museum! The children and their teacher's spontaneity and enthusiasm are valuable and moving. Needless to say, there is ample material here for cross-curricu- jar activities involving language and arts.
Literature has pride of place, too, with an enlightening review of Virginia Woolf's short stories. There's no need to be afraid of this English femme de lettres, who haunts the literary memory of the early 20th century.
We haven't forgotten science and history - two themes that also lend themselves to cross-curricular activities. This being hurricane season, teachers may want to discuss them in class, which leads ÙS to look at natural disasters in general, mostly from a geolog- ical angle, as in science class.
This season will be marked by the twentieth anniver- sary of The Fall of the Berlin Wall. We have a histori- cal survey of the Cold War and an interview with a for- mer refugee from the communist Bloc, which will allow you to work with history teachers.
We have emphasised aurai comprehension in our
worksheets, paying particular attention to the differ- 1~ence between training and checking.
And by the way, we're very grateful for your suggestions of what you'd like to see in this magazine, so please don't hesitate to let us know!
