R6sum6.

A
Abstract. - NaCl and NaCI-(0.1-1) mole-% NaBr crystals having [OOl] orientation were plas- tically deformed into Stage I of the work-hardening curve. The dislocation structure thus intro- duced has been analyzed by transmission electron microscopy with respect to the deformation behaviour.
The excessive radiation damage of the alkali halides, which limits observation times under normal operating conditions to the order of seconds only, has been restricted by cooling the specimens ( - 18 K) and using high accelerating voltages (400 kV). The dislocations were pinned by X-irra- diation to prevent rearrangements resulting from specimen handling and especially from cooling.
Generally dislocations of one glide system ( 110 )

are observed indicating that easy glide is characteristic of Stage I. The density of secondary dislocations, which generally are clustered locally, is relatively low and varies slightly with Br--content. In pure NaCl and NaCI-0.1 % NaBr screw dislocations are observed to contain frequently long jogs with attached edgedisloca- tion dipoles. Accordingly the flow stress is very prbbably determined by the bowing of screw dislo- cations between jogs as proposed by Gilman and Johnston. For a Br--content of 1 % the screw dislocation lines are smooth and strongly bowed out indicating that with increasing Br--content the jog process is gradually suppressed.-
