Addis Ababa, 1 March 2007 (ECA): The 2007 Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 2 – 3 April. The theme of this year's conference is:

“ Accelerating Africa's Growth and Development to Meet the Millennium Development Goals - Emerging Challenges and the Way Forward” .

A technical preparatory meeting of the Committee of Experts will precede the Ministerial segment from 29 to 31 March 2007.

The Conference is expected to take stock of the experiences of African countries in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals and consider strategies and concrete actions for accelerating Africa's development agenda.

An interactive ministerial panel discussion on the theme, involving a select group of regional and international personalities, including the former president of Tanzania, H.E. Benjamin Mkapa, Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs, the Director of The Earth Institute at Columbia University, and the Director General of the World Trade Organization , Pascal Lamy; will be organized as an integral part of the Conference.

The annual Conference of Ministers organized by the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) has in recent years provided a key forum for agreement on strategy in tackling critical development challenges facing the continent. The 2007 conference outcome will be a major input into a progress report on the achievement of the MDGs to be submitted to the July Summit of the African Union Assembly by the African Union Commission, the Africa Development Bank and ECA.
