Titanium doped sapphire (A1203:~i3+) is now recognized as one of the most attractive candidate for efficient and broadly tunable solid state laser operation between 650 and 1050 nrn*.

Most of .the crystals used for this application are usually grown by the Czokralski (CZ) or the heat exchangsr method (H. E. M. )

.

Loss problems arise with the CZ samples because of the existence of a non negligible and unwanted absorption band around 800nm, i.e. precisely in the wavelength domain of laser emission.

Namely, though they are? lower doped than the CZ crystals, the H.E.M. san~ples have a more favorable optical quality and they give the best laser performance.

In this comrnunicatior~, report is made on equivalent perforatanoe of Verneuil grown ~ 1 : ~ ~ 0i ~single crystals. ~ + Several samples of these high optical quality single crystals were

choosen and scanned in transmission. Their fluorescence quantum efficiencies were determined and compared to their laser performance. The best of them have given 50 % slope efficiencies with a 75 % output coupler. Tuning was accomplished between 680 and 810 nm with only one set of mirrors and up to 7mJ of output energy (only limited by surface damage of . t h e mirrors) were obtained.
