Between
the Oueen's Jubilee, the Olympie Games, several festivals, and the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of both Jamaica's and Trinidad and Tobago's independence,London will be the multicultural capital of the world this summer!
We celebrate by "visiting" Trinidad and Tobago, a small Island country, and by looking at Anglo-Caribbean literature.
The Caribbean Islands have given the world not only two Nobel prizewinners for literature, but also an array of poets and novelists. Including the fascinating dub poet Benjamin Zephaniah, who we interviewed for this issue.
The World Shakespeare Festival, which began in London on Will's birthday (April 23), and the film Anonymous invite us to consider once again who really wrote ail those plaIs. It's always an entertaining question... but in the end, does it mat- ter? To paraphrase Shakespeare himself, the plaIs are the thing!
We also look at the HIV-AIDS pandemie, which is now entering its third devastat- ing decade. Yeu ean read an account of living with AIDS since 1984, as weil as an analysis of the situation in South Africa, where things are looking up slightly, despite a hast of obstacles. Pupils will learn about the singer Annie Lennox's commitment to helping South African women and children fight AIDS.
in terms of teehnology in the classroom, this is it: we have stepped into the new age and there's no turning back. Some teachers actually ask their students to turn their phones on in class. Even if you acen't yet ready ta follow their lead, these practices are weil worth reading about.
if yeu are warried about getting caught up in a vortex of new technologies, one fact is reassuring: pupils have always needed teaehers, and they always will.
,Pupils need to listen... and to be heard, as Claudine Martina explains in "Interac- tion". And who else but a human teacher could give that?
We hope you'll enjoy this multi- cultural, multimedia issue of New Standpoints in the run-up to wonde, rful summer holidays.
