S u m m a ry :

W e exam in ed 1 4 9 m arbled shore crabs, Pachygrapsus marmoratus, from the coast o f Portugal for parasites. In particular, w e focused our effort on the c ra b th oracic g a n g lio n . The thoracic g a n g lio n is the largest concentration o f nervous tissue in a c ra b and thus, parasites associated w ith this o rg an are w e ll situated to influence host be ha vio r. W e found m e tacercariae o f tw o m icro p h a llid trem atode species in the th oracic g a n g lio n . W e also found a m icrosporan a n d an a p ic o m p le xa n associated w ith the th oracic g a n g lio n . O th e r parasites not associated w ith the thoracic g a n g lio n included g re g a rin e trophozoites w h ic h w e re present in the digestive dive rticula e in some o f the crabs an d the entoniscid isop od, G ra p s io n cavo lini. M e ta c e rc a ria e o f one o f the trem atodes (p ro b a b ly M icro p h a llu s p a c h y g ra p s i (D eblock and Prevot)), m ay influence the m ortality o f its host.

N ou s avons exam iné 1 4 9 crabes marbrés, Pachygrapsus marmoratus, en pro ve na nce d e la côte du Portugal à la recherche d e parasites. En particulier, nous avons concentré nos efforts sur le g a n g lio n thoracique d e ces crabes. Le g a n g lio n thoracique est la plus im portante concentration d e tissus nerveux chez le cra b e et les parasites présents dans cet org a n e sont d o n c à même d'influencer le com portem ent d e l'hôte. N ou s avons trouvé des métacercaires d e deux espèces d e Trématodes M icro p h a llid é s dans le g a n g lio n thoracique. N ou s avons aussi trouvé un M icro sp o rid é et un A p ico m p le x a associés à ce g a n g lio n . D'autres parasites, non présents dans le g a n g lio n , sont des trophozoites d e G régarines observés ou niveau du tube d ig e stif d e quelques crabes et de l'isop ode Entoniscien G rapsio n cavo lini. Les m étacercaires d e l'un des Trématodes (pro ba ble m e nt M icro pha llus pachygrapsi (Deblock a n d Prévot)), peuvent influencer la m ortalité d e l'hôte.

n the course of an investigation into the host speci­

ficity of the rhizocephalan barnacle, Sacculina carcini, for Carcinus m aen as and Pachygrapsus m arm oratus (Kuris et al., submitted), we had occasion to examine two populations of P. m arm oratus on the coast of sou­

thern Portugal for parasites. The most distinctive aspect of this study was a careful examination of the thoracic ganglion for parasites. Few, if any, studies of any crus­

tacean have excised and carefully examined the thoracic ganglion for parasites. We also report on other parasites found in a general examination of the hemocoel.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

e examined 71 P. m arm oratus from the Mira River estuary (60 from Furnas - southern shore and 11 from Vila Nova de Milfontes

- northern shore) and 78 from the tidepools of the rocky outer coast at Sao Torpes, ~ 20 km north of the Mira River estuary (5 km south of Sines). Crabs exa­

mined ranged in size from 7-30 mm carapace width (CW, measured inside the second pair of lateral spines). The carapace was removed, the hemocoel, digestive glands, gonads and the surface of the cardiac stomach and buccal musculature were inspected for parasites. After removing the digestive gland from the thorax, the nerves connected to the thoracic ganglion were severed, the ganglion removed and carefully examined with a compound microscope at 100 x, 200 x and 400 x magnifications. All parasites detected were recorded. The metacercariae in the thoracic ganglia were counted.

wo species of trematode metacercariae were present in the thoracic ganglion at Sao Torpes.

Both appeared to be microphallids. The larger species had spherical metacercaria and was present in 33 % of the crabs. The prevalence of this metacercaria significantly increased with increasing crab size (%2 =

18.6, P < 0.005, N = 78), while its mean intensity did not (Table I). These metacercariae were highly aggre­

gated among the crabs; 55 % of the metacercariae were recovered from only three of the 26 infected crabs. The smaller species of metacercaria was also probably a microphallid, based on presence of a stylet. Their volume was only about one-tenth that of the larger species. They were present in only 6.4 % of the crabs from Sao Torpes and had a maximum intensity of only two cysts per crab.

A few small packets of microsporan spores were pre­

sent in the thoracic ganglia of several crabs from both the Mira River estuary (7 %) and at Sao Torpes (4 %).

None were found in crabs greater than 20 mm CW. No evident pathology was associated with these light infec­

tions. Additionally, two black ovoid bodies with naked apicomplexan sporozoites were found in a single crab (male, 16 mm carapace width) from Sao Torpes.

The entoniscid isopod, G rapsion cavolin i, was the only metazoan parasite not associated with the thoracic ganglion. It was present at a prevalence of 18 % at Vila Nova de Milfontes in the Mira River estuary and on the outer coast at Sao Torpes at a prevalence of 5 %.

All infected crabs had a single infection with the excep­

tion of one double infection in a crab at Sao Torpes.

All parasitized crabs were greater than 16 mm carapace width. We also observed (but did not quantify) gre- garine trophozoites in the digestive diverticulae in crabs from Sao Torpes.

DISCUSSION

T his is the first report of parasites of P ach y ­ grapsus m arm oratu s from the coast of Portugal.

G rapsion cav olin i has been reported from other Atlantic and Mediterranean populations of P. m a rm o - ratus (Bourdon, 1964; Perez, 1933). We did not find the rhizocephalan barnacle, S accu lin a benedeni, in our samples. It has been reported from Mediterranean populations (Perez, 1933) but does not appear to infect P. m arm oratus from the Atlantic coast. The large

microphallid is morphologically similar to and is pro­

bably M icrophallus p a ch y g rap si (Deblock and Prevot) (Prevot, 1971). Near Marseille, its final host is the gull, Larus argentatus, and its first intermediate host is Ver- metus triqueter (Prevot, 1971). We are unable to fur­

ther identify the uncommon small microphallid and the apicomplexan. The gregarine is Cephaloidophora confor- mis (Deising, 1851) and is often found in the diges­

tive diverticula of P. m arm oratus (Vivares, 1972; Vivares

& van Wormhoudt, 1976).

This investigation is the most extensive examination for parasites of the thoracic ganglion of any crustacean.

Our findings suggest that this may be an important organ to examine in other crabs. The thoracic ganglion is the largest concentration of nervous tissue in a crab and parasites located in this organ may be well-situated to influence the behavior of infected crabs. Although our data are insufficient for a definitive analysis, it is possible that the metacercariae in the thoracic ganglion may influence the susceptibility of these crabs to preda­

tion by their avian final hosts. Prevalence of M. p a ch y ­ grapsi increases with crab size, showing that larger crabs are susceptible to this parasite, but intensity does not similarly increase. This suggests that heavily infected crabs may be experiencing a higher mortality than are crabs with less intense infections. Further stu­

dies are necessary to fully evaluate this hypothesis.
