CROQUET & LAWN BOWLS
The finals of the Swiss Handicap Championship (Challenge Valcourt) took place last weekend. With the semi finals on Saturday followed by the final on Sunday. The weather over the weekend continued to be hot and humid; subjecting the players to ravages of the intensive tropical heat.
The semi final line up was, Ian Sexton (-1/2) V Andre Duval (20) and Danny Davids (11) V Nicholas Bulloch (16), the matches were the best of 3. In the first semi final between Ian and Andre, the difference in handicaps gave Andre 201/2 bisques (extra turns). The first game was a very close affair, with Ian just winning by 1 point (26-25). The second game put pressure on Andre, as he had to win to stay in the hunt, he duly responded using his bisques to great effect, thus winning by 26-0. The third and decisive game was a very close encounter, with Ian finally winning by 3 points (26-23), booking his place in the final.
The second semi final was a more drawn out affair, the first game was a gruelling game lasting just over 5 hours in the persistent sunshine, both players suffering due to the conditions, Nick winning by 1 point (26-25). For the next game a time limit of 3 hours was imposed, Danny coming through with a strong finish to take the game by 4 points (22-18).
After this marathon against the elements, unfortunately the decider wasn’t played (walk over) and Danny moved forward to play Ian in the final.
In the final Danny received 11-1/2 bisques and Ian none. Danny the defending Champion needed to get a good start, but Ian was playing very well and took the first game by 20 points (26-6). The pressure was on Danny, seeking to retain his Championship and needing to win the remaining 2 games. The second game was a lot closer than the first, Danny ran out of bisques with 10
points remaining to score. Ian had yet to make an impression in the game but with Danny’s bisques no longer standing, the game started to turn in Ian’s favour. Ian finally won the second game 26-18, to take the Championship by 2 games to nil.
The Swiss Advanced Championship takes place this weekend starting on Friday evening, 15-17 August.
Spectators are very welcome.

PÉTANQUE
D’abord un grand merci à Jean Chevallier pour son sens de l’organisation et sa contribution personnelle pour honorer son challenge et aussi fêter ses soixante- dix balais! Seize doublettes partici- paient à ce concours qui se déroulait comme à l’accoutumée en trois parties avec chaque fois changement de partenaire. Notre juge arbitre René Charpenne tenant la feuille de marque avec beaucoup d’attention devait proclamer vainqueur un nouveau venu au sein du club mais pétanqueur acharné à l’extérieur notre ami Serge Grappe avec trois parties gagnées et qui est aussi adroit dans sa vie profes-sionnelle de grutier qu’à la pétanque, la précision étant un critère recom- mandée pour les deux disciplines.
2ème : Claude Macari qui, je pense, a dû s’appliquer et se concentrer plus particulièrement pour démon- trer ses talents à Martine son épouse présente ce soir là.
3ème : Fred Lejeune qui rien que par son nom amène la fraîcheur, un ami de la famille Macari et qui par son accent chantonnant nous rappelle le sud.
1ère féminine : Patricia Clerc plus à l’aise que son époux et qui nous prouve une nouvelle fois son adresse.
Merci à tous les participants et rendez-vous le jeudi 28 août pour le Challenge Jean-Claude Frot.
