A
study
was conducted on 10multiparous
sows of theLarge
White breed fromday
19 of lactation. The animals were distributed into two groups of 5 andplaced
indigestibility
cages.They
received a diet based onbarley supplemented
withprotein
either in form ofsoyabean
oil-meal!5 or horse-bean of the
variety
« Pavane < with addition of DL-methionine(T TIFNNE
etal., 1975 ).
On account of the mean
feeding
level at thisstage
of lactation( 5 kg/day),
the mean intakeof crude
protein, lysine
andsulphur
amino acids were701 .6
g, 32.1 g,2 6. 3 grespectivelyperday.
The
apparent digestibilities
of amino acids in the two diets were evaluated and itappeared
that the
apparent digestibilities
ofarginine, histidine, glutamic
acid andproline
werehigher
than that of
nitrogen; conversely,
threonine,lysine, tyrosine
and alanine showedlower apparent digestibilities.
Measurement of the blood level of free amino
acids, hours
after the first meal did not show anyimportant
difference between the two groups,confirming
thegood digestibility
andmetabolic utilization of the horse-bean diet as
compared
with thesoyabean
oil-meal diet(E T i E VNE
et
al., 1975).
Estimation of the
daily
amounts of amino acids available tosatisfy
maintenance and pro- ductionexpenditures
of the animal,except
milkproduction,
is discussed.According
to this cal-culation,
it appears that the maternal benefit is low or inexistant asregards lysine,
which remains the firstlimiting
amino acid of these diets forlactating
sows.Protein supply of piglets weaned
